Important visitor this weekend – Herschel Sims

Last weekend, 22 football recruits visited the Oklahoma State campus. One of those visitors – 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle Alex Villarreal of Hidalgo, Texas – reportedly has switched his commitment from Houston to OSU.

This weekend, it is believed that only one recruit is visiting, and he is an extremely important figure in the Cowboys’ 2011 recruiting effort.

The visitor is Herschel Sims, a five-star running back from Abilene (Texas) High School. Sims committed to OSU in April, but recently has expressed interest in TCU.

With OSU offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen and running backs coach Robert Gillespie having moved to West Virginia, and with receivers coach Gunter Brewer having departed for Ole Miss, Cowboy coach Mike Gundy is attempting to fill two staff vacancies.

Gillespie recruited Sims for OSU, and they had developed a solid friendship.

Before the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Sims was quoted as saying, "I still believe that I am going to end up (at OSU), and then again I want to still get he feel of who (will succeed Gillespie).

“I hope that they bring somebody in quick because signing day is (Feb. 2). I don't want them to bring somebody in a week or two before signing day, and me not like them and I end up changing."

As of Friday – 11 days before national signing day – Gundy apparently has not hired a coordinator, a running backs coach or a receivers coach. If any of those staff positions has been filled, neither Gundy nor OSU has confirmed it.

Five weeks have passed since Holgorsen announced that he would be leaving, and OSU still does not have a coordinator.

In the attempt to sustain Sims’ commitment, Gundy himself had better turn on the charm this weekend. OSU needs Sims not only because he may emerge as a big-time college talent, but because the Cowboys are extremely thin in the backfield. When spring practice begins in early March, OSU will have only two proven backs – sophomores Joseph Randle and Jeremy Smith.

I heard an "OSU insider" reporting on one of the morning talk shows this morning that they had hired an assisant from Southern Miss to be the running backs coach.

I hope he doesn't do one of those goofy hat games like that one tool did on signing day.

I hope Sims realizes that coaches come and go (as seen across the annual college, NFL, and NBA landscape). However, when making a decision, he should really commit himself to the school and not to an individual.

Gundy better step on it or at the very least let him know who they hire. It would be a shame not to land him because of not hiring a coach.

Thats not how it works G-Block. What ties does Simms have to OSU other than the two people that are now gone? None what-so-ever. So its perfectly logical for him to use his head and get all the details before making the biggest commitment of his life and future. Theres no call for a sense of "School Pride" on this decision.

I will say that someone needs to get crazy and slash the tires on the TCU recruiting van. They nabbed Brandon Carter from OU and now their nipping at your heels for Simms. What a bunch of butt nuggets they are! lol

A coach should never be held hostage by a recruit. Gundy needs to do what is best for the program and if that means taking his time in the hiring process, so be it.

Also, concerning depth, how many schools ever have more than two "proven" running backs at the same time? Even if a school rotates three, the third is usually used very sparingly.

OSU will be fine. Everything I have read and heard points to Sims signing with the Pokes on Feb. 2nd.

The hiring of Kasey Dunn helps too. Sims will be at OSU.

I don't know Mike.. How much do you think OSU will use the Diamond formation this year? It seems that an offense needs a whole stall of backs to run it. I know that OU has talented backs running out of their ears right now.
