In Conference USA, an 18-1 run by the Golden Hurricane

With last week’s 41-7 rout at Houston, the University of Tulsa football team improved to 6-0 in Conference USA play this season.

That in itself is impressive, but a bigger-picture examination reveals that the TU program has been the league’s most consistent for three seasons.

On Oct. 9, 2010, the Golden Hurricane lost 21-18 at SMU. Since then, TU is 18-1 in conference regular-season games. The only setback occurred on Nov. 26, 2011, when Houston prevailed 48-16 at H.A. Chapman Stadium (ruining TU’s bid for the league’s West Division title).

In the 18-season history of Conference USA football, Southern Miss had the longest conference win streak – 14 in 1998-2000. Over a three-year span, the Golden Eagles were 20-1 in conference play. That qualifies as the best 21-game stretch ever a C-USA team in league play. If TU can defeat UCF on Saturday and win at SMU on Nov. 24, the Hurricane will have matched Southern Miss’ 20-1 feat.

“I’d say it’s something we should be proud of,” TU coach Bill Blankenship. “Over time, this will mean more for us. Consistency is what you want for your program. There’s no question, we’ve found different levels of excitement during this stretch.”

Of the 18 C-USA victories, TU won by seven or fewer points on seven occasions and by at least 21 points on nine occasions.

As a 1996-2004 member of the WAC, Tulsa’s best record over any 19-game span of conference games was 9-10 (2002-04). At the end of its 51-year membership in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Hurricane dominated the league. The best 19-game record was 19-0 (1982-85). That 19-0 mark was part of Tulsa’s 26-game Valley win streak.

You mean 2011?

Consistency in C-USA is great. Get back to me when you beat a non-conference opponent.
