In Gundy era, 105 of 177 recruits were from Texas high schools

In seven previous football recruiting classes since Mike Gundy became the head coach, Oklahoma State signed 177 players.

The breakdown: 105 recruits were from Texas high schools, while 22 were from Oklahoma high schools and 26 were junior-college prospects.

The Cowboys signed 24 high school recruits from states other than Texas and Oklahoma: 24. Six were from Georgia, four were from Arkansas, three were from Kansas (including Joseph Randle), two were from Missouri and two were from Tennessee. There was one each from Utah, Colorado (Zac Robinson), Louisiana, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina and Kentucky.

Wednesday is national signing day. If everyone on OSU’s current commitment list does sign – and if Los Angeles wide receiver-running back Jaydon Mickens commits tonight, as expected, and signs on Wednesday – there would be 22 players in the OSU Class of 2012.

There would be 12 recruits from Texas high schools, two from Oklahoma high schools (Wagoner’s Kevin Peterson and Broken Arrow’s Zac Veatch) and three junior-college prospects (including Calvin Barnett, a former U.S. Army All-American from Booker T. Washington High School). From states other than Texas and Oklahoma, there would be five recruits (including wide receiver C.J. Curry from Flowery Branch, Ga.).

Quarterback Wes Lunt, who enrolled early and will compete for the starting job during spring practice, is the first Illinois high school player to have been signed by Gundy. Mickens, the MVP of the Jan. 3 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl in Phoenix, would be the first California high school player to have been signed by the Gundy-era Cowboys.

Gundy has been quoted as saying he knows how to win a MNC at oSu, although he may not know how to win one at, say, Arizona.

The way to win at oSu is to recruit Texas.

The 5:1 ratio of Texas signees to OK signees seems to be proportional (if not under) the comparative ratios of schools and players in the two states.

Coach has demonstrated the ability to sign great Oklahoma kids and win with them (eg, Weed, Black, Coop, Adcock, Bailey, Smith, Staley, Moore, Webb, Lowe, Chelf, et al).
