When it comes spreading rumors and gossip, a lot of local sports talk radio is the equivalent of a bucket of slop.

Proof of the incompetence that justifies the zero point something ratings numbers can be found in the fact that neither hosts nor nut-case callers alike attribute sources.

Everybody hears stuff, but never says from whom.

Some of the lowest stuff ever is being spread about Sean Sutton. Here's what should happen to callers or hosts who won't say where they heard something: they should be audited by the IRS.

Here are a couple of basketball picks for you.

Everybody likes North Carolina and UCLA. Good. They're all yours. Let's see how the Beach Boy's nephew likes having basketballs blocked back off his skull. And how could you pick anybody that Duke beat? Self is Roy Williams without the Kleenex. And just how must Kansas feel, Roy runs, Bill doesn't rule it out.

Memphis and Kansas.

Mr. Picker, is there a smidgen of loyalty between Coach Self and Eddie Sutton which might preclude Self from wading into the "mess" at OSU. It would have been one thing to let Sean's contract expire, and then move in. With Sean having been thrown out, the ramifications could last for years.

Now there is a tremendous question.

Gene, you win these picks at Santa Anita tomorrow: Yankee Bravo and Polonius in the SA Derby; Western something or other and Captain Sparrow in the mile and three quarters third; Golden Balls in the seventh (in all seriousness).

But your question is a beauty and probably goes beyond Self -- and might preclude anybody loyal to Eddie Sutton from going for the bread in Stillwater.

Jeff (5 years ago)
Self is an alum from OSU. So is Sean. Obviously Sean's loyalties to the university are not reciprocated by the university. Or it could simply be that because Sean didn't win as much as some would have liked that he was bye-bye, alum or not, no quarter given. Methinks Self is cognisant of this, for he's no dummy.

See, Self would be remiss going to Stillwater knowing they just forced out one of their own before his time to put up or shut up had really arrived.

Attention all prospective job applicants to Oklahoma State University: the writing is already on the wall, even before you get here. And the grace period is short, so win 'em all now...or else.

Jeff,

Was Blake worried about taking the OU football job after Schnelly only got one year? How about Stoops a little over two years later. You can rest assured that Holder will let any candidate know that Sean's dismissal was about more that wins and losses (even if it wans't).

And besides, if a coach gets a guaranteed contract with the numbers that are being talked about would getting fired after a couple of years be a bad thing?

"Everybody hears stuff, but never says from whom."

OK...I get it....its like calling the kettle black..."The Picker"....good one.

John Blake was worried about nothing because he figured the ringing edorsement Switzer gave to Donnie Duncan meant he'd be untouchable. Problem is, Blake was the worst coach in the history of the program, of those who coached more than one year. Blake was fired for lack of results. Sutton was as well, but his results were leaps and bounds better than Blakes.

As far as Schnellenberger goes, his problems were myriad. From DUIs to drinking on the job to Ms. Schnelly giving herself the five-finger-discount at Norman department stores to refusing the players water at practice, his firing was simply trying to right a wrong as quickly as possible. There's no doubt in my mind Howie would have done better than Blake given the three years Blake was given.

But here's what's different about the OU football issue from the OSU basketball issue. Stoops was hired by a new athletic director whom was just hired himself. And Castiglione didn't hire Blake, who never should ahve been hired in the first place (how many head coaching jobs has he had since? Zero. The guy would change playbooks on Wednesday of game week. Come on...Sutton is easily more credible than John Blake).

I get your point, though. But Stoops is not alumni to OU. He's from Iowa. OU was his first head coaching job. OSU should be just as elated to be in a similar situation. Get either a top-flight assistant from a top-flight school (unlikely) or get a go-getting up-and-comer from a mid-major.

If you believe the damage by the Suttons, Holder, and Pickens was not done overnight, you have to beleive it won't be fixed overnight as well. OU didn't hire Spurrier - they hired his assistant. Stoops was eager when he came to OU.

Danny Manning would be a great hire for OSU. Or if they want more experience, Bennet from Wazzu would be a good one.

What are the best college basketball coaching jobs? Probably Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, Duke, and UNC. After those top 5 there are many more (maybe 20 or 30?)in the second tier and i believe Oklahoma State to be one of them. OSU isn't a bad place for basketball. Great arena, great fans, history of winning, no giant looming football shadow the try and fight like at some schools, etc. With the money i think they will throw at an established coach (Self, Calipari, whoever else they try to get) they may land one. I think Self would be crazy to leave KU, but you never know. I have no problem with hiring an up and comer, but i don't think that is what Holder will do. I think he'll go after a big name and big attendance next year.
Shrouded Llama (5 years ago)
OH YEAH! I forgot about this! Some analyst on ESPN today mentioned OSU as a possibility while talking about often retired Kansas/Pistons/Knicks coach Larry Brown. He (I think it was Woody on Around The Horn, who is half crazy!) said that he "might like to get back into the Big 12 where he won a National Championship." I guess Coach Brown has been talking about wanting to get back into coaching. I have a feeling that this coaching search is going to be interesting to watch.

HEY PICKER!

You said it was a crime for Tulsa to be involved with the CBI.

Is it a crime if you win?

I think we have something to look forward to next year!

Were you in the standing room only crowd?
Tom (5 years ago)
I find all this talk about "loyalty" to be completely ridiculous. Millions of dollars are involved here, coaches negotiate at great length by and through their attorneys to get the best deals possible. Allowing a head coach to designate his son was the real problem here. Arrogance and nepotism rarely if ever works. OSU should never have allowed it. Can't compare OU football to OSU situation. But here goes, I see more of a Gary Gibbs set-up, coach "loyal" to university, good assistant, puts up good wins-loss record, has a Dan Quayle "deer in the headlight "look whenever a microphone is shoved in his face, doesn't meet way overblown expectations and is canned. End of story.

Mr. Picker, thanks for
your tout on the Santa Anita Derby, etc. Tish and I will start looking for a new place on Monday.
Tom (5 years ago)
Congrats on nailing KU over Carolina. After Davidson I thought KU (remember ORU?) was in way over their heads, turns out NC just another overrated east team. No brainer on Memphis clobbering UCLA (overrated west team).

World Picker:
Here is how your Santa Anita picks fared Saturday (in all seriousness):

Derby:
Polonius - out of the money
Yankee Bravo-finished first in the next race

Third Race:
Westrn Magic-out of the money
Captain Sparrow-out of the money

Seventh Race:
Golden Balls - ran third-paid $2.80

Gene must hate you for giving him those tips. But he must know by now not to act on them. One would hope so anyway.

You are the worst horse handicapper in the known world. Incredibly, you insist on proving it from time to time.

If you didn't make money on yesterday's Santa Anita Derby, you should quit wagering forever.

Oh, I forgot to tell you, I suck donkey balls!
steve (5 years ago)
not to boost your ego any more than it already is, but those were good picks. not that i didn't pick the same, but my kansas pick was mostly my big XII homerism, and i saw that UCLA's offense just stunk.

Picker:

Will Self be pressured/encouraged by other big-time coaches to take the OSU money, thus raising the bar for said coaches? A rising-tide-lifts-all-boats thing? Wouldn’t Calipari, Williams, etc., want Self to make $4 mil a year so they can go back to their AD and say…

Picker, I find it interesting that as you trash the local talk radio you are trashing the entire sports department that writes for the Tulsa World....do you not think your colleagues know what they talk and write about? Apparently not!

Gene: Your Denis of Cork just now finished.

Nit Picker: The pain of your jealousy is starting to get a little sad.

You like our two hoop picks, you pitiful groupie wannabe hack who couldn't get a job writing on sidewalks?
world picker (5 years ago)
All I said about sports talk radio is most of it is self-absorbed junk, and that the ratings are next to zero.

Facts both.
Nit Picker (5 years ago)
Wow, almost missed this one, World Picker.

I quess the radio sports talk show ratings would be below zero if you didn't listen to them all the time.

I wonder how their numbers compare to yours? Or your paper's?
They are a competitor of the paper, and thus a competitor of you. It must be your way of competing with them to bash them.
Is it working?

I am writing on the same sidewalk you are, chump. In fact, it is your sidewalk. Your only avenue of expression. You have nothing else.

I, on the other hand, have many blogs from which to chose.

Hey, your pick in the Eighth at SA came in first...in the Ninth.
Gene called.
