Is Florida Another USC?
Published: 1/5/2009 4:22 PM

Here are six reasons why certain OU fans seem more reserved than usual on the brink of the biggest football game in school history.

6. Injuries.

Sure, injuries happen.

But linebacker and running back pain hurts more than others.

Using the best runner to return kickoffs against a bum was an unfortunate decision.

5. The Venables defense.

Can it stop a balanced attack from a team with equal talent?

4. Big or Medium Game Bob?

Is a long time off harmful to a finesse passing game?

3. A kicking game of sub-standard means.

Florida's returners run the 40 in something like 3.75.

2. The Big 12 is overrated.

Didn't the SEC's sixth or seventh or eight best team mop up the field with the Big 12 co-champ?

1. An OU player says Tebow would rank about fourth in the Big 12.

Even if he's right, that makes for a better secret.

Picker, You might as well move to Florida because your mighty Polks lost and now you're trying to wish bad things on OU. Well picker, put this in your OSU hat, OU 45 fla.28. Smoke it! BOOMER SOONER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big 12 co-champ?
There is no such thing.
SEC's 6th or 7th best team?
Golly, are you referring to the one that beat Florida?

Still can't get over Missouri? I bet you hate all your ex-girlfriends.

All of a sudden, after losing to Ole Miss, Texas Tech becomes a Big XII co-champ, something that the Picker refused to acknowledge even once during his sordid lovefest with the Texas Cowpeople. Big XII South co-champs is what they were in 2008. Does it surprise anyone that the Picker would reverse his earlier stance? No...not really.

I wouldn't put much stock in the SEC's sixth or seventh best team beating Texas Tech. After all, Nebraska took Tech to overtime. In Lubbock! That disqualified Tech from the Big 12 co-championship.

i hope you are wrong about the usc reference, what an embarrassment that was. and to add insult to injury i remember a story coming out after the game how the ou defense was asking usc to take it easy on them. if you are going to get beat i just hope you'll be a man about it and take your medicine rather than whine about it. my brother (who dislikes ou because of barry s.)thinks ou will win and when he jumps on the bandwagon it's time to get off, he's a world class jinx.
that being said i hope the sooners clobber em, just don't think that's gonna happen.

Will somebody please name one high quality team OU has beaten?

Thank you very moderately.

Will someone please name one 9-4 team that beat Oklahoma at home? Thank you very moderately.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Texas would have been 8-5 in the SEC.
World Picker (4 years ago)
And what did the 9-4 team do to the Big 12 co-champ?

Why in the world do we have to argue every bowl season about which conference is best? WHO CARES!!!! The bowls determine NOTHING. That's right. NOTHING. If anything, they determine which team wanted to be there most and played best on that day. Did the best team win? Who knows and WHO CARES. You want to discuss something important...then figure out a way to give Utah a chance at raising the crystal at the end of the year. As it is, the only game that matters in on Thursday night, and any prior bowls tell you squat about who might win.
Jeremy (4 years ago)
Picker...with all due respect, you can NEVER use a comparison arguement to say a team is better than another team. You'll come full circle every time. GTech beats Goergia...who beat LSU...who clobbered GTech in a bowl? Who is better? Answer: who cares. After Thursday night...we still won't likely know which team is best (unless it's a rout). We shouldn't care. The best team in basketball wins the NCAA tourney 1.5% of the time. But it doesn't matter...the team that won 6 in a row gets to be called Champ. So, let's all stop with the comparison on conferences and figure out a way to define a true champion (not best team!!).
World Picker (4 years ago)
Jeremy, you're more or less right.

We'll sure find out which of two teams is best Thursday.

Matthew (4 years ago)
And what did OU do to said Big 12 Co-Champ, picker?

Besides, said 9-4 team BEAT FLORIDA on their HOME FIELD. If Florida had gone out and beaten them up, I might say you have a point.

As it stands, Ole Miss beat Florida by 1 (at Gainesville), Ole Miss beat Texas Tech by 13, and OU beat Texas Tech by 44. So apparently OU and Ole Miss are the best two of this group of 4, using your logic.

Although I hope for a different outcome, this has USC written all over it. No fault to Bob and the team, Florida just has them outmanned in a virtual home game.
Fla 48 - OU 24

I wouldn't count OU out just yet. TCU was not a bad team.

Being that TCU had Utah beat on their home field before blowing in the last minute, and Utah just blitzed the 2nd best team in the SEC, if Oklahoma plays well (and that's a big if as it has been a long time in a bowl game), I think they stand a very good chance of winning.

wow Picker, you hit the nail right on the head. I hope you're wrong though.

Picker, did you notice that Georgia had trouble with Michigan St and Alabama was whipped by a team that got to a bowl game on a soft schedule? Utah's opponents are a joke including Alabama. You picking Florida to win insures an OU victory.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Vern, you won't know what I picked until tomorrow!

I'm still in the Think Tank.

Utah is number one.

It played as decent a schedule as anybody AND IT DIDN'T LOSE A GAME!

3.75 forty ......that's funny Dave
Seriously that's really funny! I figure it will go something like this...Coach Schmidt has had plenty of time to prepare and prepare some more and right about now I figure the boys are pretty much over trained, beat down and ready for a break. They'll come out flat, leg dead just like they have in the last 3 or 4 bowl games not to mention, & I hate to say this out loud, but Florida's a much better team. I am glad we aren't playing Utah. 3.75 forty I'm still laughing! Carry On! Rick
