Is Gundy Text Messaging?
Published: 11/10/2008 4:37 PM
Last Modified: 11/10/2008 4:37 PM

Last year, somebody emailed in to ask if we lived in the state where that coach went berserk and screamed at the media about being the man to whom sensitive questions should be asked.

We said yeah, it was our state.

And now come the emails wanting to know if we lived in the state where the head coach didn't look at the field, where, when the defense was playing, the coach sat by himself on the bench doing something strange with a notebook and a pencil or a pen.

That does it.

Guess what, coach, you went to a continuing education class and a football game broke out!

Come on, turn around, look there, quick, there goes another receiver for a quick six. Listen, if we have to watch that defense, so do you.

After the unsightly Texas Tech game, coach Gundy said the key was that Oklahoma State couldn't stop the Red Raiders. Only, how does he know? Did somebody tell him? Did he catch the replay? He wasn't even watching!

Isn't watching the football game an important part of coaching? Don't you run offensive plays based on what happened with the defense?

Good Christmas, coach, heads up, man, there's a game going on out there!

We expect OU to be favored by 3 over Texas Tech and to win by more than that.

OSU will be favored over OU by 1 or 2 in Stillwater; outcome, currently unknown.

Why all that?

Because with the spread offense, the home field is everything.

Two good teams don't run the spread, Bama and UCS, and play the best defense in the country. Get the message?

Under the current Bowl Cheating System, USC and Texas are most apt to be robbed. Texas could be cheated worse than any team in BCS history if OU wins out and is higher rated!

Does anybody remember that Texas soundly defeated OU on a neutral field?

And lost to Tech on a dropped interception in Lubbock?

If OU obliterates Tech, Texas has to go to the Big 12 champ game, or the fuzz should be called.

Under the current Bowl Cheating System Texas may get robbed, but USC is way overrated. It would be behind OSU in the Big 12 South.

You need to quit drinking the big west coast market kool-aid now that you are off the SEC cola.
Have you ever been west of Elk City?

Other than having the stars in alignment Alabama is the most overrated team in the Country. There are at least five teams which could pound the Tide, Texas Tech, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, and OSU.

Bama should just forfeit the Florida game now, and try to learn some offense before bowl time.
Eric (4 years ago)
Come on Picker...i usually agree with you but ther eis noway that Texas will deserve to go over OU if OU wins out. Especially if OU wins big at Tech. I mean if that is your thinking then there is noway that Tech should fall below Texas if OU beats them. I mean Tech beat Texas right? Dropped int? They were blowing Texas out the whole game. If that is your thinking then OU was one kick off return from blowing that game wide open. what are your thughts on florida being ahead of both texas and ou. Lose to ol miss at home??? Does the LSU win or the Georgia win look impressive now? LSU has Les Miles players in there and look at them go! 3 losses already! Either way...OU wins out and they go...despite the best efforts of ESPN! Its up to the computers baby! One last thing....if OU beats tech soundly....then you just dont move OU up? Texas will be on a bye week. Beat the #2 team and you dont move? Thats a joke!!

Licker,
No, you don't run offensive plays based on what your defense did. What does that mean? You might remember that Gundy took over the offensive coordinator gig? That's what he's doing. Not that I care.
A month or two back you were saying that USC shouldn't get pushed up so high due to how bad the PAC-10 is, and now they're getting ripped off? What if Alabama has one loss to Florida, are they getting ripped off when they don't make the BCS Championship?
I only came on to rag you about another lame comment you made a while back. You might recall when Oregon State beat USC I said, 'Watch Oregon State rip off some wins and make a bowl.' To which you replied, 'Oregon State couldn't rip off a postage stamp.' Well look who's bowl eligible and in the driver's seat to win the PAC-10 and make the Rose Bowl! Take one guess, chump.

Wow he sure did what he likes to do, got everyong riled up, if he was actually good at predicting things he wouldn't be writing for Tulsa World, he would be in Vegas counting his money. His job is to get under your skin, and sometimes he's good at it, even funny at times, besides we need someone to stick it to when they are wrong, and we are gonna be sticking it to you big time after this season big fella!

What if...
OU wins out.
Florida or Alabama lose before the SEC championship and then the one that lost beats the other in the championship game.
OU vs. Texas for the BCS championship.
It COULD happen even though Texas would not play in the Big 12 Championship game. OU fans would love it, but it should not happen. The BCS must be trashed in favor of a playoff!

Just how bad are you doing this season on your picks? Need a bail out from D.C.?

OSU should be favored over OU in Stoolwater, regardless of outcome of OU/Taco Teck game, because OSU may very well be as good, if not better than OU this year. They actually ran through Texas' defense like a hot knife through a Bevo meadow muffin.

Teck is very good this year. Are you still calling them overrated and gimmiky like you did at beginning of the season??

You are trying to deflect your shortcomings by building up Texas v. OU BCS ranking. Most folks recognize your stupid ploy by now, I am sure.

The loss to Taco Teck by OSU was disappointing, but could have been much closer in Stoolwater.

Most of the rest of your drivel is just that.
Dawn (4 years ago)
A few weeks ago I stated on one of the Picker's blogs that OSU would beat OU by three touchdowns...I respectfully rescind that prediction. OSU SUCKED this last Saturday and if they can't get it together they'll be lucky to beat Colorado this weekend!

It sure was fun getting people going on that blog though.

I'll take my ball and go home now and will get out the wet noodles while I'm at it.

New prediction? I'll wait and see, right now I'm thinking OSU by 1.
Dash Riprock (4 years ago)
Dawn, I'm still not sure that you're gonna be wrong on your original prediction, so don't be too swift to change your mind. If Tech beats OU in Norman, and that's not a big if, how will the Sooners muster much desire to go to Stillwater and play with the Pokes? What's to play for? 3rd in the Big 12 South? We've seen Stoops Troops lay down (Fiesta Bowl vs. Boise State, Fiesta Bowl vs. West Virginia) when they've had exactly ZERO to gain by winning their bowl game.
Rhett (4 years ago)
NIT Picker,

First of all you're a moron. Secondly there is no way OSU is as good or better than OU. They have one receiver that they primarily throw to that racks up his stats against weak teams and one TE. Their QB is average and again racks up his stats against weak teams. Really nice passing game there. Their RB is good and has good stats since the holes he runs through are about 10 yards wide and they have a good running scheme. Their defense is weak and has always been weak but again did well against weak teams so everyone thought they were improved. I'm not saying OU will win, even though they are better, due to the fact that anything can happen during a Rivalry game on the weaker team's homefield.

Thanks Dash! I needed some cheering up today!

We also live in the state where "that coach" didn't know one of his predecessors (Jimmy Johnson) was "still around." I realize he's probably doing other kinds of football things on Sunday, but come on. This is the same coach who calls Texas Tech a "pretty good" football team after getting walloped by them. Is that some kind of understatement?
World Picker (4 years ago)
Poor Sad Nit Picker: You know the money you owe me? That I can prove? You want to go double or nothing and you can have the unbeatable Tech versus OU?

How can you be compulsive over jobs you wish you had and watch game after game after game and make the same mistakes week after week?

The spread offense is all about the home field.

OU over Tech is spent money, suckers.

Eric: If OU goes anywhere over Texas, it will be the biggest disgrace in the history of sports humanity. Texas soundly defeated OU on a neutral field.

Have OU homers no shame?

How do you pinheads like this brilliant point: The two best defenses in the country, USC and Bama, don't run the spread. Read and learn, people, quit being such homers and pay attention.

Chris (4 years ago)
Rhett,

Sorry, but no team has played three top-3 teams on the road. OSU doesn't have as good of an offense as I would like, but they had to deal with some tough teams this season in hostile territory.

You can break it down however you want, but UT, Tech and OU have been able to pad stats at HOME for the most part this season. OSU had to play cupcakes at home due to scheduling, so of course they are going to pad stats. Don't OU and Tech do the same thing? OU hasn't even played two of the better teams in the South yet, and you still assume they are better. How about you wait until after they play Tech (at home, of course) and then a road game (for once) against OSU.

And do you really think OU has a good defense? Or does the offense just score so much it doesn't matter?

OSU is a good team, and they will play even better at home when OU comes to town.

I would love to see OU play UT, Tech and Mizzou on the road.
sodypoke11 (4 years ago)
All good points Chris. Picker, your theory about the spread offense only working at home will be put to the test when Tech plays at OU. The two best spread offenses in the country duking it out, should be interesting. Picker, please extrapolate about what the "Two best defenses" in the country are for teams that don't run the spread offense comment. Are you saying that you can't have a good defense if you run the spread? Also, abou those two "best" defenses. How many offenses that average over 30 points a game have they played? I would venture to say none. They have not been tested, just OSU's defense had not been tested until the Texas game. Spread the criticism out Pick.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Mark it down: Tech won't even look like the same team on the road.

You practice against the spread, you pay the price on D.

Eric (4 years ago)
Picker....would you have OU beat Tech (the #2 team) soundly and not move at all?

Has that ever happened?

Im not saying that Longhorn fans would not have a gripe but if that is the case then so would Tech fans. Point is...OU's non conference schedule is going to play a part in the computer rankings (as it should) and that will be the difference. OU will and should pass Texas

I owe you no money, punk. You continue to live in a dream world.

Why would I want to bet you now since you are broke and couldn't pay anyway, chump?

I don't need a job. I have plenty of $$. I love to fish, travel, play golf, and bait childish bloggers like you. It is lots of fun.

Re: "the two best defenses in the country don't run the spread."
Granted, but isn't the real issue: have they played any good spread offenses in compiling their defensive stats???

Didn't Teck have a tough time with Nebraska this year-in Lubbock?

Chris: you are correct about the home game advantage this year for OU-even though Dallas is still in Texas...technically anyway.
The last two times OU played Teck in Lubbock they lost.
OSU at home is extremely tough on OU, and will be even more difficult this year.

Also, the Big12 Championship game was in San Antonio, last year ( a home field for OU)and OU beat Mizzou. The 2003 NC game was in New Orleans, LA (home game for LSU) and LSU beat OU and OU was killed in KC (home field for KSU) that year by KSU.

On the other end of that stick: Fiasco Bowl I was a homer for Boise State, while Fiasco Bowl II was certainly not a homer for WV--yet both won.

Nit Picker,

I have never seen you somewhat agree with me. This is quite an accomplishment for us both.

I will celebrate with you.

One small thing: while OU/TEXAS is played in Dallas, it actually is a shorter drive from Norman to get to Dallas. I don't think anyone thinks UT has the home field advantage in that matchup, and I am assuming you don't either.

Just wanted to point that out.
