Is OU's Football Program Coming Apart?
Published: 12/16/2011 4:30 PM
Last Modified: 12/16/2011 4:30 PM

Players are bailing, transferring.

Recruits are questioning.

Losses are mounting.

Scapegoats are ducking.

Homers talk only of the past.

A failed head coach (Mike Stoops) is thought to be the savior.

The top Vegas bowl play is Iowa plus the points.

What's wrong?

What's to be done?

The media is too soft. A number one team has fallen off the map. It's time to get tougher.

The good 'ol boys coaching society makes too much money. Fat cats have gotten lazy.

What's needed is new unrelated blood on the staff.

Talent isn't everything.

Big Bob has them playing for a championship -- a win over a mediocre Iowa squad will once again have the Sooners on top. Anyone have a contact in Vegas? Bet my house on Iowa, please.

I'm probably in the minority on this, but it is my opinion that athletic ability is a bonus and not a requirement to be a great player/team. If athletic talent were the only important criteria, then OU would almost never lose. Not that a player doesn't need some talent, but there are intangible things like work ethic and good attitude that players need first and foremost.

It is always my impression that the coaches point the finger at the players when they make a mistake without looking at themselves first to see if they are doing a good enough job at teaching the system to the players.

Whatever it is, OU does seem to have jumped the track. Injuries certainly have contributed, of course.

Blood is thicker than water....Did Cale Gundy really give his brother OU's game plan? Looked like it to me.

Blue Max (last year)
From what I saw at Bedlam, OU didn't bring a game plan.

rshacklefordjr Cale Gundy gave OU's game plan away to OSU? Anyone w/ any f-ball smarts knew the game plan to beat OU, throw deep, throw often, criss-cross the safeties.
RG III had that figured out weeks ago!

This is a new day Gooner fans, Them Boys from Stagnatewater are going & winning head to head w/OU in recruiting, facilities, & fan support.
OU is no longer the one & only dominant team in the state. T Boone Gundy has given OSU the opportunity to be a consistent 10 game winner for now on.

OMG, win ONE game and everything changes. Same song umpteenth verse, good grief!! Well, at least you can say "we beat you 17 out of the last 100 or so games." Just think in 80 or so years, if OSU wins every game, you'll catch up. Good luck with that!! A consistent winner from now on. . .dream on!

It's a GAME. College is for EDUCATION. Enjoying our teams on Saturdays is a plus, but the team isn't why the university exists, or why serious students select the institution. Old friends who still live in Norman say that Stoops is a wonderful role model for those boys. It is better to win than to lose, But it's still just a game.

Rocky, Stoops is a great guy, no doubt, but to paraphrase a couple of old sports sayings: Good guys finish last, and Winning is Everything. OU (school and alums) won't accept a football team that doesn't dominate. Of course a university is more than a pro sports training facility. But not much more at OU.

I like The Picker's "batman" signal in the banner! LOL

I could have made a killing back when I was in Vegas in April. The sports book had OU picked early on with good odds for a BCS finish. I should have made several $20 bets.

The key word in this column is "lazy." Few college coaches find much to work for after a national championship and a few hefty pay raises. The fact that Bob isn't interested in going anywhere else is an indication that he is just too comfortable. Time to look for a young PhD (Poor, Hungry and Driven).

"Homers talk only of the past."

And one Homer doesn't say anything at all.

OU will be just fine....

They'll return next season as pre-season #1, top 3 at worst & Sooner fans everywhere will be once again proclaim their claim on #1....

Okie St. might crack the top 20, their losses will be written up as too much to lose & the program will return to their former selves....

It's stuff that's etched in stone & one season will not erase it....

The Sooners won't change, I wish they would, but they won't....

OSU's program will return to its former self? Didn't everyone say that after the 2009 season? Right before OSU won 11 games the following year?

Hate to break it to you but OSU is on a different level than they used to be. They haven't finished a regular season with less than nine wins since 2007.

Will they win 11 again next year? Probably not. But I wouldn't bet on them losing more than three.
wgspost (last year)
Will they indeed return next season? To the extent that they'll (we'll) be overrated massively in the pre-season poll, yes, they'll return. But problems abound with no visibile solutions in sight. As was once the problem during Barry' tenure, character is now once again an issue (this comes from sources within the program). Jughead Jones doesn't have the right stuff to play a big game under pressure, and sadly, the defensive coaching staff, well frankly, sucks. When the players in the defensive secondary are out of position year after year after year, it's telling. Our Dear Picker carry's the baggage of trying to be inflammatory, often at the expense of fairness, but in the case of the situation in Norman, everything he's said is right...and then some.
wgspost (last year)
Did Cale give Mike his game plan? Absurd. And why should Mike need it? That would be reminiscent of Nixon breaking in the Democratic National HQ in the Watergate when he already had the election in the bag by a landslide.

if that's what you really think, you should go communicate with somebody who will react more according to your wishes.
The Picker (last year)
Could the defections be enough to scare off even Mike Stoops?
green cardigan (last year)
Picker would look way handsome in a green cardigan.
norsemustang (last year)
Another running back leaving and Ronnell Lewis academically ineligible for the bowl game. Should be interesting to see OU's morale during the bowl game.
MexiMike (last year)
Character and leadership are what's missing in Norman. No amount of talent can replace those two qualities.
