Is Phil Steele Mr. Football?
Published: 5/31/2010 4:28 PM
Last Modified: 5/31/2010 4:28 PM

By now, many are aware of the excitement generated by the fact that OU is finally number one again in football, baby! This story has actually been written about and discussed by grown adults!

OU is number one according a pre-pre-pre-pre-pre season football magazine out in May by somebody named Phil Steele. Given that preposterously early pub date, the magazine must have been slapped together in March.

And just what does Phil Steele know?

Last year he had OU number 4! He didn't have national champ Alabama in his top five! He had Notre Dame number 7! He had USC number 3! He had Cal number 9! And get this, he had Mississippi number 6! That's what he knows. Not beans.

In more news, coach Nolan continues to do a brilliant job with the WNBA team here. The second straight horrible crowd of 4,000 was recorded. Somebody needs to wake up and get the ticket prices down to a point where more can afford to go and see coach Nolan win coach of the year.

In other news, LeBron couldn't carry Kobe's shoe string.

Kobe is probably as good as Michael.

"Kobe is probably as good as Michael."

Oh boy. Now we're really stirring the pot. I'm a Laker fan (I'm from LA, no bandwagoning here) so I definitely want to agree with you but I just don't think I can. Jordan will forever hold the title as greatest ever and for good reason.

With that said, Kobe isn't too far behind. We'll see what he does with the back end of his career.

Thanks for the summation of what Phil Steele doesn't know Picker. I and many others have had a lot of respect for the opinions of Phil Steele, but your critique just goes to show how really nobody seems able to know everything.
Although, yes, some seem able to know more than others, especially locally
TMS (3 years ago)
The many others with respect for Phil are obviously OU fans. They expect to be ranked #1 regardless.
tulsandn (3 years ago)
Jordan's 6 rings are great & awesome BUT compared to 11, it's nothing....

Bill Russell won 5 MVP trophies but in those seasons', he made 1st team NBA only 3 times....

To me, the greatest NBA player/champion of all-time is also the most under-appreciated player also....

CELTICS win the 2010 NBA championship in 7 games.... Boston has a better starting 5 & bench, Kobe's really good but he's outnumbered in this series....
The Picker (3 years ago)
So far as I can recall, Russell had some pretty good players beside and around him.

Look what Kobe is winning with here: An on-again soft-again Gasol, a skillful and tall player who can be muscled, a 55-year old point guard who has to stop to rest on a fast break, and some hot/cold role players. Gasol couldn't carry McHale's practice socks.

Phil Steele has somehow bought a reputation by virtue of doing nothing much.
Ignatz (3 years ago)
Very hard to go against Bill Russell on this one.
The Picker (3 years ago)
A first round Hall-of-Famer had Jordan's back.

A whole team of Hall-of-Famer's had Russell's back.

Who is better, Gasol or McHale?

Hey Picker you might want to re-think that comment about Phil Steele, here's a reply to a Texas fan on his website:

Mike You say I do a lousy job picking the Big 12 South. Lets see who I picked and who played in the Big 12 Title Game

2009 My pick Texas, B12 Title game Texas
2008 my pick Oklahoma B12 title game Oklahoma
2007 My pick Oklahoma B12 title game Oklahoma
2006 My pick Oklahoma B12 title game Oklahoma
2005 My pick Texas B12 title game Texas
2004 My pick Oklahoma B12 title game Oklahoma
2003 My pick Oklahoma B12 title game Oklahoma

You say I do a poor job in the Big 12 South and yet I have picked the B12 South champ SEVEN straight years. What am I missing here?

Also you ridicule me for my pick of Oklahoma at #5 last year but of the 16 magazines/internet sites in '09 my #5 was the LOWEST pick of any so I was the most accurate on OU as most had #2 or #3.

Phil"

Oh and for the record if you're going to write a column about somebody you might want to get your facts straight first,he picked OU #5 last year not #4 as you implied, and everbody else had OU picked higher. And you know as well as everybody else if not for the injuries last year OU would have been a top 5 team.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Picking Big 12 title games? You must be kidding.

My Aunt Martha's pekingese could lift a leg and pick Big 12 title games. Duh, OU, duh, Texas, duh, OU, etc.

This guy had Mississippi 6th! Loved USC. Cherished Notre Dame.

Mississippi 6th nationally??!! Case closed on picking skills.

Glenn616 (3 years ago)
Phil who? The only two times a team other than OU or Texas won the Big 12 South was Texas A&M in 1997 and 1998. It doesn't take a genius to pick the winner of the Big 12 South.

Nolan can coach. The ticket prices are ridiculous. This is the WNBA we're talking about, not the NBA

MJ is still the best NBA Player of all time, better than Kobe Bryant. He lead the Bulls to titles from 1996-1998 with Luke Longley as the center. I don't know about you, but I'd say Gasol is clearly a better center than Longley was. Also, Shaq was clearly a better center than Bill Cartwright was when the Bulls won NBA Titles from 1991-1993. I'll put Kobe at No. 2 behind Michael Jordan.

It might interest you to know that in the last 10 years,of all the major publications in the country including Athlon,The Sporting News,Lindy's,and ESPN,Phil Steele ranks #1 in prediction accuracy. His magazine was also praised by the News & Observer and Rivals , which has tracked the preaseason magazines' accuracy since 1993 and rates Phil Steele's as the most accurate in its predictions.
Oh and one more tidbit of info for you Picker,Phil Steele was the ONLY major preseason publication in the country to predict OU to win it all in 2000.So no,the case isn't closed on his picking skills, yours however are very questionable.I'll take a nationally recognized and respected magazines predictions over yours any day.

If Phil Steele's job is to get people talking, well, he did his job. It's barely June. We don't even know what they will call "that" conference, which is currently home to OU and OSU. A&M vs. Iowa State in the Big 10 chumps game? Maybe OU can recruit Kobe to sell some tickets.
juanstah (3 years ago)
Oops, I meant "tickets".
MexiMike (3 years ago)
People are stuck on Phil Steele's pick of OU and justifiabl so since they are fans. But take a look at the other teams he picked last year. Picker mentioned a few of them. Ole Miss at #6? Notre Dame at #7? USC at #3? He was way off on all three. Notre Dame was the worst because I remember people laughing at it when he made it all the way until the end of the season.

As far as Kobe goes Pick, he did have Shaq (a future HOF candidate and one of the most dominant centers ever to play the game). With that said, Bill Russell does not belong in the argument. He did not lead his teams like Kobe and MJ did. Just because he has championships does not make him the best. Heck, Robert Horry has a ton of championships.
tulsandn (3 years ago)
Bill Russell did not lead his teams ????

His last championship was as player/coach....

Bill Russell may have had HOF players to his left & right but from I been taught, great players make their teammates better....

Your comparing Robert Horry to Bill Russell ????

tulsandn (3 years ago)
Actually though, if you could line up all the players of all time & say pick first, my first choice would be Wilt Chamberlain....

Jordan 2nd, Jerry West 3rd....

wsums2 (3 years ago)
Picker:
OU will be better this year, don't get a hernia over this ranking of #1 going to the Sooners. You know these OU kids are hard workers, won't ever give up. Barring injury, which could hit any team including your beloved Alabama at any time, they could pull off the big win if they can get to the dance. But it's all fun and no games right now, the proof comes in a couple of months and that's a fact. I agree, they may be better served to ranked at #5 or 6, but we OU fans love the idea of #1. Still none of us want to see them get anything they don't earn, give em a chance, they'll be alright.

IMHO - Michael Jordan is the best there has ever been followed by Kobe, Dr. J, Wilt, etc. Then again, everyone has opinion.

Let them play the game, have playoff system for everyone, then you can truly see the champion emerge from the pack.
Your Brain (3 years ago)
LOL

He was able to pick the Big 12 South?

LOL... oh the humanity.

Let me guess.... he also went out on a limb and picked FSU to win the ACC throughout the 90's?
The Picker (3 years ago)
Your Brain, hang on, here comes another college football scoop from Boomer Phil: The SEC figures to be pretty good again this year!

Wsums2, yes, what you said is true, OU could be great as you suggest. Or, it could lose to Florida State, your local Cincy, Texas, Missouri, the Aggies, Tech and/or Oklahoma State. With no running game, a fragile offense, and a worse defense, how could OU be better than a year ago when it lost 5 and barely beat Stanford without its qb? Just asking?

Sooner509, nationally known football expert?
Try globally here, pal.
soonerfan509 (3 years ago)
Globally? lol you crack me up picker, since when is a anonymous sports writer for a local Tulsa newspaper considered "global".To quote a line from the movie Top Gun,son your ego is writing checks your body can't cash! lol Globally, give me a break dude, people in other countries don't give a rats patooty about american college football.Oh and what makes you think U doesn't have a running game? I seen where Demarco Murray set a goal of 1500 yards this year, and if he stays healthy I don't see why couldn;t achieve that goal.As a matter of fact Stoops thought it was too low.I think I'll trust Bob's judgement over yours on that too.True OU lost a few players on defense, but they are OU,they don't rebuild they reload.OU has plenty of talented players licking their chops to step in and show what they can do.So you just go on hating on OU and trying to stir the pot so you can sell more newspapers and us OU fans will just sit back and enjoy our season.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Soonerfan509 reads every mag rag ever printed and quotes Top Gun, which stole that line from everybody's drunk Uncle George.

Can you people actually believe what we do for the love of our craft?
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Tulsandn, in no way am I comparing Robert Horry to Bill Russell. I am saying that you cannot judge a player's worth by the championship rings on his fingers.

Bill Russell was great but I think that Kobe will go down in history as a better player.
norsemustang (3 years ago)
I think that there are too many variables to be able to determine whether one player is greater than another. Players play in different eras with different rules in different leagues at different positions with different teammates and different coaches. It's almost like trying to determine who the greatest NFL player of all time was when players play different positions.
love you to death master picker, but as for that closing statement, well, that dog won't hunt monsignor. kobe is great, just not when it truly matters, as this year's finals proved. other than that, we still good, homie.
