The keys to Victory,,given that the "other team" is talented with good coaching, is more often achieved with combination of the run game mixed with the passing game.
I really am not so sure that historical comparisons are that accurate. Defensive schemes have had to change on the fly since about 2001. D players today have also evolved and have become signifcantly better at a run and shoot offense.
Therefore in my opinon. OU must continue to gain ground with it's run game on the remaining opponents and continue to blend a great passing game into the blend
