Jeremy Smith now 100 percent; Gundy watches the defense

A few notes from OSU's first football spring practice on Tuesday:

* Running back Jeremy Smith, whose 2009 freshman season was cut short by shoulder surgery, has been cleared to participate in spring practice at a complete level. The former Union star will be a redshirt freshman this year and has switched jersey numbers from 36 to 31.

* OSU's Malcolm Murray, a junior-college transfer who is competing for a starting job at cornerback, requested and was given jersey No. 1 – the number formerly worn by Dez Bryant.

* Having relinquished all offensive control to new coordinator Dana Holgorsen, OSU coach Mike Gundy spent nearly half of Wednesday's spring-practice session on the defensive end of the field.
"It's enjoyable for me to watch the coaches and also some of the young players and see how they're developing," Gundy said.

* Second-year Cowboy defensive coordinator Bill Young recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery.
"I just needed to get some things cleaned up," he explained. "It's really not anything important."
Asked jokingly whether he had injured the knee while kicking the tail of a Cowboy defensive player, Young laughed and responded, "Oh, no. I wouldn't do that. Not what after happened to all of those coaches this year."

* Holgorsen says he has not yet moved his belongings from Houston to Stillwater. Asked whether he plans to move after the April 17 Orange-White game, he replied, "Maybe. We'll see. I'm enjoying (a Stillwater hotel). I've got me a nice king-bedroom suite, and they make my bed for me every day. They wash the towels. What more could you ask for?"
