John Hoover, Jimmie Tramel take a bow

The newspaper industry changes almost daily.

What was cutting edge a year ago -- or even a month ago -- is yesterday's news.

But the one constant in quality journalism is good writing. And people in Tulsa are lucky to have two of the best working in their city.

Unlike television anchors who come into your living room daily, newspaper writers are a little more anonymous. Because of that, it's not in the nature of many of us to seek the spotlight.

But please indulge me a few minutes while I shine the light on two members of the World's staff.

On Sunday, the Associated Press Sports Editors announced the final results of its 2011 awards, and two World writers were ranked among the nation's best.

John Hoover, who cover's the University of Oklahoma, was selected as the country's best beat reporter for papers from 75,001 to 175,000 in print circulation.

Jimmie Tramel's December feature on Oklahoma State women's basketball coach Jim Littell was one of the five best feature stories written in 2011 among papers 75,001 to 175,000.

Hoover (explanatory writing) and Cary Aspinwall and Guerin Emig (project reporting) also earned honorable mention from APSE for work done last year.

Obviously, the World has a tremendously dedicated and talented sports department beyond these writers.

But when sports editors from around the country single out two members of your staff, that's something special.

If you see John or Jimmie around, offer them your congratulations and your thanks. It's well deserved.

I have read Jimmie's work for many years and admired his writing ability, especially doing human interest features of sports figures. There is a lot more to an athlete or coach than what happens between the lines and Jimmie's stories really bring that out. The Bob Barry piece a few months ago was a good example. Jimmie is also known throughout the community as a fine individual. Congratulations on the awards. Both men deserve the recognition.
