Just Win Baby and ORU Does
Published: 3/3/2007 9:07 PM

Oral Roberts needed a victory and got one in the first round of the Mid-Con Tourney.
The first one is seldom easy and this one wasn't although the final score looked easy.
The Golden Eagles won by 20 in a game they should win by 20.
Centenary won just nine games this year and the Gents are not a threat to any of the possible NCAA Tournament teams.
Thus, ORU did what it should do. It overcame some early jitters. The Eagles didn't score their third point of this game until nearly six minutes was gone.
However, once the Eagles shook off the rust they were fine. Now it is up to the Eagles to keep playing at the level they played in the second half of this rout.
ORU is the best team in this league. It should win the tournament. That doesn't mean it will win the tournament.
Upsets happen all of the time. It doesn't take much. All you need is an off night, which everyone has occasionally, and the underdog has to lift its play a little bit, which also happens often.
It happens a lot.
So, just play relaxed and Oral Roberts will be fine.

I think another reason for the team's sluggishness is the different officiating style that Mid-Con allows (encourages?) in the tournament. They definitely allow more physical play. I think it throws some of the players - not just ORU - until they acclimate themselves to the more physical conditions.

I agree that ORU should win the tournament. But, all it takes is for a team to get hot from the field and for ORU to get cold - and continue to commit 19 turnovers.
