In the end, maybe some hotshot in Texas (school president? AD? legislator?) saw this passage from Greg Hansen's Arizona Daily Star column and thought a dysfunctional Big 12 was worth the all of the trouble...
"On Wednesday, Arizona's return from the Women's College World Series required busing to an airport in Tulsa, a flight to Houston, then Phoenix and, finally, a two-hour bus ride to Tucson. (It was cheaper that way.)
"You're going to see a lot more of those 10-hour journeys if the league goes to 16 teams."
