Kickoff week

After weeks of buildup -- and other less savory news -- it's finally time for football to kickoff in the Tulsa area.

I'm excited for my first high school season in Oklahoma. I have Jenks-Union circled on my calendar for next week, and I'm ready to compare the rivalry to some of the great games I've seen growing up in Texas.

I was back in Houston this past weekend and got a little sentimental over the start of the high school season in Texas.

There really is nothing like the first Friday night of the season. Even if it's 100 degrees outside, the air just feels a little cooler because you know fall is right around the corner.

Among the musts to keep up with the high school season is our preview that was delivered in Sunday's Tulsa World. There is a lot of great content from our staff, including every football schedule in the state of Oklahoma.

And Saturday, I'll be excited to see college football in Oklahoma first hand. It's disappointing that realignment is more on the front burner than the actual games -- and disappointing that it looks like Tulsa will be at less than full strength against OU -- but the games are a good cure for what ails you.

So after a long summer, get ready because it's almost time.

Welcome Michael. Jenks/Union will be a great experience for you. I know some of the 5A schools in Texas play some big time football, but there's not much that can beat the Backyard Bowl. From an athletics standpoint I can't stand either school, but I go to the state championship every year and watch the incredible matchup.

I'm definitely looking forward to it. I think it's a nice gesture that the teams play at TU. It gives casual fans the opportunity to attend the game without fighting overflow crowds at either school.
