LCD or Plasma?
Published: 8/9/2010 5:05 PM

If you don't have a high definition TV for the 2010 football season, get one.

It is every bit as important as the college education fund for the children.

You will never be able to watch a show on regular TV again.

Charge it. Borrow it. Play a slot machine for it. Just get one.

The first thing you will notice is what the local TV anchors really look like, not the sight you had imagined in some cases.

With HDTV, you can easily identify faces in the crowds at games. You can see at exactly which point Tiger's ball flies out of bounds. Here's a golf question: Why do Tiger and Philly boy hit shots off the practice tee instead of going to an overgrown field?

With your new high-def TV, you will be able to see in clear and delightful detail the best that can happen: OU chooses to man up and goes back to a solid run game, the quarterback looks before he throws, and the Sooners compete in the national title game; OSU passes for two million yards, the QB is in the Heisman race, and the Pokes go to a BCS Bowl; TU re-establishes its wide-open offense, suffers few injuries on defense, and plays for a conference title.

Or, with your new high-def set, you can clearly observe the worst that could happen: The OU runner sprains a thumb signing autographs, the QB is wild again on the road, Texas clobbers the Sooners, and they play Rutgers in some bum bowl; the OSU quarterback pulls something, the defense can't stop traffic, it finishes 6-6; TU is over-scheduled and runs out of gas and finishes 4-8.

The LCD sets seem to have a sharper picture when it comes to mid-sized or smaller screens. The black is not always as clear as it should be. The plasma is smart on the bigger models. Plasma uses gas, some worried about burn-out on earlier versions. LCD has a liquid screen, don't jab it. The tout is LCD mid-range and down, plasma big and up.

Cash in some retirement account money. Just get HDTV before the first kicks.

The sched does favor OU somewhat as Florida St., Cin, & even Texas are rebuilding. In this case, almost anything is possible for OU both positive 'n negative.

TU is in trouble and OSU is one bad performance away from looking for a new coach. To me however, the biggest question of the season is which network will hire the "lovable" Mike Leach for commentary and how long will it take one of the co-hosts to punch him in the mouth.

As far as buying a new HDTV, if any of the games are on the CW you might not notice any "upgrade"...:)

Kenmore, if OSU finishes 6-6 with a bad performance then you may be correct but if they finish 9-3 with a bad performance I don't think Gundy will be on anybody's hot seat.

Mr. Picker,
You're at least five years too late on that post. Jimm1 is correct. HDTVs have been out for quite some time.

To be fair to the Pick, I'm fairly sure he knew when they came out. I think he was only using them for his analogies of how well/bad each school could do this year.

But to catch you up with the times, Pick, nobody buys plasma anymore. It's either LCD or LED.
But What Do I Know? (3 years ago)
Picker I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to tell me. But do you recommend Best Buy, Ultimate, or Conn's?

The good - You can see the formations prior to the snap.

The bad - You can see the guy sneaking up on the quarterback while he's looking the wrong way.

Hey, Pick: I see in your fishwrap that OU's #1 RB will be returning kicks. That's sure to spark the offense, right?

Bob, that strategy should please the new OU tailbacks, all right. Injury-prone guy runs the gauntlet? That's one way to find out if he's going to make it.

OU's schedule doesn't look that simple from here.

True, the big non-conference name, Fla. State, looks like about the fourth best in Florida. And Cincy quit playing defense around Halloween. But both of those teams have new coaches and those are positives. And anybody overlooking Air Force does so at his or her own risk. Last year, AF lost to TCU by 3!

Many OU fans are proclaiming Texas to be overrated. Did anybody see its new quarterback play in the national championship game?

Tattoo, Dean and Al are calling you.

Your business is with the pep squad.

Not true, MexiMike - I just bought my monster plasma a couple of months ago and it is awesome! Plasmas are the way to go if you have a naturally dark room with minimal natural lighting. The blacks are intense and really pop on the screen. The average lifespan of the new sets are 20 years.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Hmmm, I'll keep that in mind, G-Block.

tulsapup, that is exactly what I was thinking.

While I don't ever proclaim Texas to be overrated, you seriously can't be touting the play of Garrett Gilbert in last years title game to think that is the reason they will be good.Did you see his game stats for that game?15-40,for 186 yards 2 tds 4 ints. And 72 of those yards and both his tds came on 2 passes because Jordan Shipley got open when Alabama knew they had the game in hand and let up in the 3rd quarter.Hell he couldn't even complete a simple little shovel pass, and wound up turning the ball over right before halftime which gave Bama a cheap easy score.I'm not really impressed with Gilbert.

Tatoo,
You don't know who Al and Dean are? They are the highest paid cheerleaders with microphones! Come on!!

Air Force is a legit team. They're dangerous. OU better not overlook them. Look what they did to Houston in last season's bowl game. Air Force's defense was top 20 in the nation last season.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
