LSU Fans Score
Published: 8/24/2010 3:13 PM

LSU fans are ahead of the beer foam curve when it comes to what really matters in college football: the here and now.

A great past builds tradition. But it is worth dwelling upon only if you're strong enough today. Otherwise living in the rear-view mirror is for excuse-makers.

Recently, LSU won a national championship in football. Not 15 years ago. Not 12 years ago. Not 11 years ago. Not ten years ago. Not eight years ago.

Three years ago.

And then the last two season, LSU lost 5 and 4 games, during which coach Loopy Les gave the impression of being slightly discombobulated on the sideline, calling plays. This, in the most difficult conference in the history of college football, the SEC. You could combine all the other major conferences, and those people would still would play second chair to the SEC, which has won the last four national championships.

And from the swamp comes the growl that many LSU fans don't take kindly to losing 5 and 4 games. Tiger fans feel that they are SUPPOSED to win the occasional national title, that they are SUPPOSED to compete for a national championship, that, given the funding and support, they are NOT supposed to lose 5 and then 4, back to back.

The present is where fans of big teams belong.

Excellent.

I love Big 12 fans who always say "Big 12 and SEC are the toughest conferences in football." With miles of separation between the two...can you really make that statement?

I knew it was only a matter of time before someone invented a reason for Oklahoma to envy one of the few states more backward than we are. (Yes, I've actually lived there.)

We should recall the legislature immediately to address the "college football fan gap".

In the last twenty years LSU has won their conference three times. However, they have done something lately.

Hard to discern if your animus is with Stoops, the university, or the plebian OU fans. What is clear is that on this issue your anatomy is suffering from an inappropriately placed insect.

Whatever his failings, real or imagined, it's useful to remember Stoops replaced John Blake.

If the point of the story is that OU will not win the national "championship" and that the SEC is the superior conf.....so what?
Kenmore (2 years ago)
Usually, you're pretty clear about what you're talkin' about. This time, I'm not really sure.

Yes, LSU plays in the TOUGHEST conference in the country. Yes, LSU has struggled of late. But it's not all due to playing in the toughest conference. Just look at last season's game LSU had with 'Ol Miss. Bad clock management and the STUPIDIST play call of 2009 with :01 left cost LSU the chance to win the game. "Loopy Les" lost that one, period.

Say what you will 'bout OU, but give them a little credit for playing a non-conference schedule that has a heartbeat. Does that mean OU is the next national champs? Probably not, but if they do win it, they'll have earned it.

Every year's a new year in college football, Mr. Picker. OU winning the national title 10 years ago is now a distant memory. OU hasn't even won a meaningful bowl game in over 7 years. I agree with you on that last sentence.

I've never seen OU fans so paranoid. Hilarious.

He was obviously taking a shot at Les and OSU fans. Picker, maybe you should revert to a 2nd grade writing level for the readers.

Dwayne, I don't know what you're smoking but the blog had nothing to do with OSU fans. I don't even know how you came to that conclusion.

The point was that fans of big time teams live in the present tense and not in the past. He is making the claim that OU fans use the national championship from a decade ago to justify their team greatness today.

Of course he is only looking at one side of the coin in order to make his point, but if he can make some Sooner fans mad then his goal is reached nonetheless.

Much like the year OU lost to LSU in the title game, Les's title year was sooo lucky to even be in the game. They lost to Arkansas at home in the last game of the season and then got to play for the jewelry... But the BCS really does work.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Hey kids, please go back and check out the blog once more.

There was no mention of OU. Or OSU.

So it turned out to be something of a Rorscach test, to identify sensitive Sooner fans stuck in the past!

Losing all the BCS bowls and the recent Texas domination has been blocked from numerous minds.

Four national championships in a row for the SEC.

Unbelievable.

Loki (2 years ago)
Unbelievable? Really?

Let's not be disingenuous, Pick. Your posts of 7/26/10 and 7/30/10 are but two examples of the way you've been flogging this horpse, excuse me, dead horse. This "thought experiment" does not occur in a vacuum.

The etymology of the word "fan" should have disabused you long ago that this is not a dry academic exercise. Celebrating the unrealistic sense of "entitlement" to national championships underscores one of the more seamy aspects of college sports.

That said, you have really high standards. Similarly, any columnist who does not win, or compete for a Pulitzer Prize every year must necessarily (by your standards) be judged a failure.

Your Rorscach test has an internal bias. Run the "test" in the Idaho Statesman, Ann Arbor News or Lincoln Journal Star and guess whether the "results" would be similar.

Don't "Beg the question" and then feign surprise at the results.

Yea...What Loki said!
MexiMike (2 years ago)
Really, Pick? You're going for the "Rorscach test" angle?

I know you hide behind a cartoon character but you could at least act like a man and be honest about who your blogs are aimed at.
Your Brain (2 years ago)
LOL…I don’t think the Picker was feigning surprise at the results… I think he knew exactly what kind of results he would get… aside from the lone OSU post.

As far as bias goes, I am pretty sure Nebraska fans will tell you the last 10 years have been hard… and I am also sure they are hanging their hats on the success of LAST year’s team, not 2001’s team.
Michigan fans have no delusions of grandeur either… at least not the few I know. I don’t ever hear them talking about ’97 as the reason for their optimism… they are realists and I am pretty sure they know that 2 consecutive losing seasons doesn’t a contender make.

You will be hard pressed however to find an OU fan who doesn’t mention the MNC in 2000 as the basis for OU’s current “greatness”… after all, “Big Game” Bob got his moniker from that one season… otherwise it would be “Medium Game at Best” Bob.

Loki (2 years ago)
I'm not even sure I like Stoops all that much. His winning percentage at OU comes in at something like .801 and I suspect that places the program in a pretty lofty position relative to the rest of the country.

When will good enough be good enough? You're all overweight children demanding another half gallon of ice cream.

You want big game futility? Try John Cooper's run at Ohio State.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Speaking of Uconn, that team will probably take out Mich a week Sat.

Without the past, there would be no talking football at some places.

Nebraska is getting a little uppity. Going to the Big Ten is a joke.

Watch out at Wash.

Loki (2 years ago)
To your point about living in the past, you know how many years the following was spot on:

"How many Steelers fans does it take to change a light bulb?"

"Four. One to change the bulb, three to stand around and talk about how good the old one was."
G-Block (2 years ago)
@ Loki: I'd never heard that one, but it's funny only because it is so true.

But I believe the same could be said of any team who hasn't one the big one lately. (And of course, the "big one" can be all so relative.)
Someone New (2 years ago)
Mr. Picker... I think you should have a discussion about this blog with the TW's own John Hoover... I'm assuming you saw his article on the 2000 Sooners in today's paper... ;-)
