Landry Jones: Heisman candidate

We're still over a week from the season opener, and already I get the feeling I have sold Landry Jones short. Is it too late to change my preseason Big 12 quarterback rankings (J. Johnson 1, B. Gabbert 2, R. Griffin 3, Jones 4)?

In the past 24 hours alone, I have seen or heard:

* A comprehensive USA Today piece on Jones and new Texas QB Garrett Gilbert…

* An interesting take on this year's OU-Texas game, courtesy of The Sporting News: "As well as Gilbert played in the second half of the BCS National Championship game last year, he hasn't played in the Red River Rivalry – a game that means much more because it can lead to the big prize. Jones, on the other hand, has last year's game to fall back on. All things being equal (and they may be), that's a significant advantage for Oklahoma…

* Travis Lewis' comments about Jones being named OU captain: "It's not just because he's the quarterback. Landry has shown a lot of leadership, and he's taken hold of that offense and really made it his. And not only that offense, but this team. He knows we've got his back…

* The Orlando Sentinel's "five Heisman candidates to watch as the season starts": Mark Ingram, Terrelle Pryor, Case Keenum, Kellen Moore and Landry Jones.

The list must be pretty thin this year.

Are we talking about the same Landry Jones who looked like a deer in the headlights and threw 5 picks in Lincoln last season?

Mallet at Arkansas needs to be on the list.
