Landry Jones Sacked

A year ago at this time, Landry Jones was projected to be a top five draft pick, right up there with the quarterback from the Aggies who everybody was laughing at but turned out to be pretty quick and good after all.

Today, Landry Jones looks something like a third-round draft pick.

In this instance, the following can be said for returning to college for one more year: Ouch.

Sometimes coming back works. Sometimes it doesn't. Generally speaking, if you're a top 20 pick, sail when the wind starts to blow, go, flee, run to the NFL, take the money. There's only so much better a top 20 pick can become. A player has to be honest with himself about how good he really is and about how much he can improve.

Perhaps Landry can improve his stock in the two-plus months before the NFL draft.

A thrower did just win the Super Bowl. Again. But there's a new wave of quarterback emerging in the pro league. It's not necessarily an option runner. It's a great thrower with quick feet and great pocket awareness.

It probably doesn't help all that much that the state's last two first-round quarterbacks are on the clock: Cleveland is suddenly reported to be thinking younger after an OK year from Weeden. And Bradford has played like somebody earning a small fraction of his salary.

Everybody agrees that changes are needed if OU is to attempt to rejoin the nation's elite. A first step in the "new" direction would be admitting obvious mistakes. Like saying that it's always best if a great player returns for one more year at OU.

Weeden and Bradford both could use some help. Football is a team sport.

OU won three games it should have lost because of its lousy defense. Jones did what had to be done to win those. The three games OU lost, OU was no match for the two teams that were ranked number one at one time and the other that probably should have been a number one. Quarterbacks can only do so much.

Obviously should have gone to the pros last year.

Correct.

BTW, did you pick your name/number because it's sandwiched between two primes?

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
