LeBron Celebrates Self
Published: 7/7/2010 3:11 PM
Last Modified: 7/7/2010 3:13 PM

Russell? Magic? Michael? Larry? Kobe?

Could you see any of those proven greats -- stress PROVEN -- stage an hour long ego-feeding, grandstanding, publicity-crazed, off-putting self-promoting home movie like what LeBron James has scheduled on ESPN Thursday night?

One of the ESPN worshippers will be the almost unwatchable Stuart Scott, who sometimes speaks baby talk to the basketball player, calling him, "Bron-Bron."

Here is what James has done to warrant the professional version of the Hat Trick, where some high school character full of himself calls a press conference to announce where he will go to college: Nothing.

Not in three years, not in five years, not in two years, but in seven years -- stress SEVEN YEARS -- James has won nothing.

There is more to being special than being an athlete.

This TV special is like throwing yourself a birthday party.

But What Do I Know? (3 years ago)
I don't care where he goes. Gimme Kevin Durrant any time. Signs a new mega contract with humility and class. He's a role model, not Bon-Bon.

Hey, I have a great idea...let's all just NOT WATCH THE SPECIAL and NOT BUY ANY PRODUCTS THAT PURCHASED ADVERTISING TIME and let ESPN bomb in that time slot. Pass this on to everyone you know, all over the country, especially to those dilberts who believe that ESPN writers, producers, and talking heads actually know the first thing about sports.

I'm not saying I agree with what Lebron is doing, but of course the idiot nose picker neglected to tell us that the money for ALL ads sold during the special will be donated to charity.

yea it's self indulgent - but we're talking about THE best player in the league and he's not in the top 20 in salaries. He's due, and he'll get what's due very soon. I hope he joins the heat and starts stacking up rings. Anything to not have to watch Adam Morrison get another ring while wearing a cheap horrible suit on the bench. I still have nightmares after watching him during the postgame celebration after game 7

I absolutely agree, Pick. I'm pretty much done with LeBron's cockiness. His shameless self promotion smacks of arrogance and classlessness.

Also, donating all the proceeds to charity doesn't justify the event. In fact, if anything, it's insulting to those who are force fed the idea that this whole event is a good thing.

If LeBron wants to eventually go down in history as one of the greatest, he needs to work on his performance on the court (when it matters most) and his humility off the court.

Ugh, sorry for the triple post.

And the Lakers will still win it all, no matter where he goes.

Donating money to charity is insulting to people? Who knew??
The Picker (3 years ago)
MG Sooner, he couldn't write a charity a check for, oh, $100 million without shining an hour long spotlight on himself?
tulsandn (3 years ago)
All I know is that I could care less where loser Lebron goes, it don't matter to me....

I cheer & follow the OKC Thunder, I'll watch Lebron play when he is on the court with KD, RW, James Harden, SERGE IBAKA, Eric Maynor, Nick Collison, Thabo & Cole....

Picker, we haven't even seen the special yet. Maybe he wants to spend 30 minutes promoting Boys & Girls clubs? I have heard he will announce his decision within the 1st 10 minutes of the show, so what will they do for the other 50 minutes? How about for once we actually wait to see what happens before reacting like a bunch of knee-jerk idiots? Probably too much to ask.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Mgsooner, it's insulting because he isn't doing this for charity. The only reason charity is attached is so that he won't be even further criticized for creating such a pompous and self-indulgent event. Like The Pick said, if he really wanted to do something for charity he could write a big check himself.

Regardless of what this "special" entails, it shouldn't be happening in the first place. I don't think it is a knee-jerk reaction to say that the guy is an attention craving egomaniac. This is the same guy that campaigned for himself by wearing a t-shirt that said "LBJ 4 MVP."
mgsooner (3 years ago)
As I said in my first comment, I'm not saying I agree with what he's doing. But do I think it's the worst act by a human being in sports history like some are making it out to be? No. I feel like there are a lot of other more signficant things to be outraged by, particularly when this event IS generating money for charity, motivations aside.
Tulsan in Exile (3 years ago)
A charity event at the Boys and Girls Club in Greenwich, Connecticut? What a joke! That is one of the wealthiest communities in the country. The boys and girls probably play polo (the equine variety). LeYawn James is a perfect representative of the NBA: a bunch of self-promoting, arrogant, high-school dropout, cartoon addicted millionaires.
The Picker (3 years ago)
MGsooner, that was pretty tender, all right, those 42 seconds your hero devoted to the poor children.

What a joke. What a disgrace. It was worse than I even imagined it could be. It was a self-serving, embarrassing bunch of garbage.
