Lessons Learned from Jim Stanley

Former Oklahoma State football coach Jim Stanley, who coached OSU’s only Big Eight championship team, died on Thursday.
The Cowboys won a share of the Big Eight title in 1976. He coached OSU to the Fiesta Bowl and Tangerine Bowl.
He recruited and coached running back Terry Miller, the Heisman Trophy runnerup and one of the greatest offensive players in school history.
But, what most fans will remember, is that Stanley was one of the toughest coaches ever.
Stanley’s teams reflected that toughness, winning games by playing rugged defense and using a power running game.
In other words, OSU was all about power football when Stanley coached.
That’s appropriate. He played for Bear Bryant.
Stanley was much beloved by his players, assistant coaches and friends throughout Oklahoma.
His reputation, as one of the toughest and most demanding coaches, even extended to the media.
He was my introduction to college football coaches. The lesson learned? Come prepared. Ask intelligent questions. Be fair.
He will be missed.
