Let Us Win One, Mack!
Published: 6/15/2009 3:40 PM

What does Stoops have to do to catch back up to Mack?

These amazing, and shocking, numbers bring us to the 2009 season: OU is 0-5 in its last five BCS games, and 1-3 in its last four versus Texas.

That is a 1-8 record in its last 9 biggest games!

OU was beaten by better teams in two or three of those games.

USC was twice as good. Florida was probably a tiny bit better.

But what has caused the recent misadventures with the Longhorns?

Defense. OU has difficulty stopping mobile quarterbacks on good teams. That seems to be a common link in most of the huge-game losses.

OU defenders seem frequently caught in no-man's land, halfway between the quarterback and an open receiver. It seems to run a thinking man's defense in a game that favors the aggressor.

Given the trend toward monster-game losses, this year's OU-Texas contest could be one of the most important ever, with legacies beginning to take shape.

How many days till OU-Texas ???

tulsandn, one hundred and twenty-five. Give me Texas. You take the points.

One simple problem with at least last year's OU-UT game: IF Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy had been knocked out of the game in the first half, wouldn't it have been unlikely that team would have won the game?? That said, why is it any different if one of the teams was to lost their best, most influential player on defense? Ryan Reynolds going down and OU's bad KO coverage cost them the ball game last year.

Give me Crimson and Cream over BURNT ORANGE anytime. Bebo will be steak on the Grill this year because this is Stoop's best Defense ever, if they stay healthy.
BobSmith007 (4 years ago)
I would take Pick's observation a step further, which relates to Dcood's point. It's not a failure of defensive "players." They match up athletically. It's a failure of defensive "schemes." And that takes you back to the question that Pick aways asks: What's up with the coordinators?

Come on, Vern......Sudden Sam and the Soons 28-21 over the Shoehorns year before last.....

No argument regarding BCS losses, 1-3 record against Texas the past 4 years and defense being the root cause of the big game losses since 2003. HOWEVER, I don't agree that OU is 1-8 in its "last 9 biggest games!" I'd suggest any bowl game that is not the BCS title game is interesting but unimportant and therefore not a big game. Beating Nebraska to get to play Boise State was a big game. Beating Missouri to get to play West Virgina was a big game. Beating Texas Tech, others, and Missouri to get to play Florida was a big game. OU is 1-3 in BCS title games under Stoops and defense won 1 and lost 4. Fix the defense and you've fixed the problem.

Bob Smith -- Great point, a little new blood ever decade or so on defense couldn't hurt.

63 Tackles -- Another great point. Games like all that stuff with Missouri and the ones you mentioned were absolutely big at the time, but lost some glow over the course of the season. In hindsight. All those games that get you were you want to be are big enough, OSU, etc.

But the "biggest" game record is: 1-8.

The OU circus clowns on the radio say the Boise and West Virginia BCS losses shouldn't count as big games because the Sooners weren't interested!

This year's Texas game could be one of the biggest in the history of the series. Even college football! The Texas schedule is a disgrace. OU beats Mack or it's Tex-Florida in the biggest hype-fest of all time.

The big games this year are: Miami, Texas, OSU, conference title game, BCS bowl game.

The biggest games are: Texas, BCS bowl.

One prob, Pick-arino...........the Steers fall apart in Stilllllllllllwater regardless of the RRS winner......the day of reckoning has arrived........where are ya, O-Staters ????

SUEA, we are here. We are watching all u gooners getting your panties in a wad cause the Picker has enough stones NOT to lay at the gooners feet!!!

SUEA, we're here. And the smart ones aren't making any boisterous claims just yet about the Texas game. I, personally, am waiting to see what happens with the Georgia game first. The outcome of that game should say a lot about what to expect this season (hopefully this time, it is as the Picker predicted).

Pick, I would have to say another "big" game for OU would be at T-Tech...let's see if they can get rid of the monkey that resides on their backs each time they are in the baron wasteland that is Lubbock.

barren.
OU_Fanatic (4 years ago)
In OU's last three losses to Texas, the OU defense have given up a combined 97 points. That's an average of about 33 points per game given up. Against OU, Texas scored a defensive touchdown in both 2005 and 2006 and a Special Teams Touchdown in 2008. If the Sooners continue to play defense this poorly, it will be another loss to Texas.
MexiMike, you're correct on the Texas Tech game, with the slanted goal lines and the homer refs.
Deep In The Heart (4 years ago)
SUEA,

You are so ignorant. The Texas record vs OSU is 21 - 2. So where is it they fell apart?
Deep In The Heart (4 years ago)
Mexi-Mike, I don't think T Tech is going to be a problem for either OU or OSU this year. Tech will be way down from last year. It wasn't to T Tech's advantage to have the game at Texas moved up to Sept 19. It will be their QB's first road game....and at night...and against a powerhouse looking for revenge. This would be the game to take Texas and give the points. Texas will cover, no matter what it is.
SUEA (4 years ago)
Deeeeeeeeeeep..........don't think you're too smart yourself cutting off your 2 middle fingers and thumb to dispay the "hook 'em horns" and then bowing down to a cow when you run on the field......lol
SUEA (4 years ago)
In the 2009 season, the Sooners have a tough start with BYU but should survive....the trip to Miami is very dangerous....the Texas game is always hard to predict.......the Sooner defense will be counted on heavily against McCoy and his mates.......offense will need to have some success against Texas' solid defense.......trips to Nebraska, Kansas, and Tech won't be a cakewalk, and the OSU game won't be easy....looks like a 10-2 year from this vantage point with losses to Texas and Kansas or Nebraska......
TMS (4 years ago)
A mobile QB is required in college football and they are always tougher than the kind that stands behind a big line and does nothing but throw although that looks good in a conf with no pass defense. OU would have been a better team with you know who.
Deep In The Heart (4 years ago)
Suea,

And what do the Sooners do? Since they aren't creative enought to come up with their won sign, they use the Longhorns and turn it upside down. And they do this no matter who they are playing!

I would think Sooner fans would avoid references to "smart" for obvious reasons.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
Thanks Lance-a-lot, stupid typo.

Deep in the heart, I'm not disputing that OU will be much better than Tech this year because they will...the problem is that they always are and for some reason (refs, slanted goallines, mysterious concussions), Tech always gives them fits in Lubbock. That's why I think it will be a big game.

Tattoo, nobody said anything about Gundy's record versus Stoops excluding yourself. Your "OSWho" and "Stoolwater" jokes have become as tired as your need for attention through confrontation. Get over it.
SUEA (4 years ago)
Deep Dude - horns up or down just a gesture...no biggie......Steers probably should avoid references to the Sooners and the cheating issue though.......the name Roger Clemens does ring a bell doesn't it ????
The Picker (4 years ago)
Is Texas nuts?
Is the Big 12 nuts?
The same tiebreaker mess is apt to happen again this year: Texas beats OU and then loses to OSU, Baylor or at the Aggies. And OU goes to the biggest bowl again!
The tiebreaker rules weren't changed!
The Texas nonconference schedule is so lousy, it will lag behind in any tiebreaker poll.
Deep In The Heart (4 years ago)
Suea,

Roger was way past the Longhorns when he was "accused". I'm talking about the present. OU admitted they cheated. OU is on probation for cheating. Texas isn't, nor will they be. They are TEXAS.
SUEA (4 years ago)
Head buried deep in the sand......2008-2009.....Sooners played for the title in feetball, men's and women's roundball Elite 8 and Final 4......regular season Big 12 softball champs...roundball big 12 regional finalist.........Castiglione - top AD..................but, but, we're texas......you're texas ??? you're nothing.......
