So, I watched the episode of "Saving Grace" guest-starring Barry Switzer the other night for the same reason that I once watched the TV movie about Dennis Rodman's life story: Because the state we live in is a co-star.
I mentioned the other day that Switzer has been in a few TV shows and I asked his one-time peer, former Oklahoma State football coach Pat Jones, if there were any TV shows (past or present) that he would like to be in. A cameo on "Gunsmoke," perhaps?
Jones' answer: "Maybe 60 minutes," he said. "Or I could go on "Meet the Press" and lie like the rest of 'em."
Jones and Switzer helped make football fun back in their heyday because they weren't afraid to show a little personality.
Nowadays, everyone is more robotic.
Who's in favor of a little retro?

Apparently, it's not politically correct to tell it like it is in this day and age. Water it down, take out the whole truth, as not to offend anyone with any kind of reality. "Coach speak' is the safest way to go...Just ask anyone who can't tell the truth. Dr. Phil says it's called 'lying by omission'. Whaaaa?

Love the moniker. Of course, Dash Riprock was one of the actor fellas who tried to pursue Elly Mae on "The Beverly Hillbillies."

I remember some tv sports fellow discussing the big OU-Texas rivalry by baiting Switzer on how Darrell Royal had out coached him in 1977 with a 3rd team quarterback and Switzer telling the guy Royal had nothing to do with it, that any idiot could have figured out that handing the ball off to Earl Campbell as often as possible would beat most teams.

Switzer also said Royal should spend more time (I think) recruiting and less time hanging around guitar-pickers. Good stuff.

Royal said that Will Rogers had apparantely never met Barry Switzer.

I think the best cameo I've ever seen by a college or pro coach on the tube was Jimmy Johnson's caged appearance on 'The Shield' where he screamed in the background "Terry's the one you want!"

Darrell Royal is a gentleman and an Oklahoman at heart, despite his days at the UT helm. It's true, he and Switzer didn't cuddle, but they've reached a mutually agreable respect...a sort of stasis...as a result of historic hindsights.

I agree, JT, everyone is so PC today it is boring.

Maybe, however, and end to this ennui is in sight.

Seems some college presidents want to lower the legal drinking age to 18 to reduce the binge drinking epidemic.

At the same time, a school system in Texas is looking to arm its faculty as a way to protect the students from being shot.

Billy Tubbs was always good for a nugget of sarcasm. Didn't realize how much I missed him until Kelvin quit calling me.

In all fairness to the coaches, their are unpleasant contractual ramifications to creating public controversy.
Not the same for sports writers, fans and bloggers.
