As ESPN TV jokesters hype West Viriginia; and as Florida prepares to flop; and as discipline take a holiday in Dallas; and as the Chiefs wonder if they will score; and as OSU fans stage moral-victory pep rallies for the Georgia game; and as OU fans wonder if Stoops will ever beat Mack Brown again; and as Broken Arrow fixes to quit pussy-footing around and play some serious high school football for a change; and as a record number of players enter the picking contest; and as TU puts its entire season on the line in the first game of the year; as Game Day turns into Lame Day: we will now discuss the most important thing in football history.

It's more important than the foward pass.

Than majoring in physical education.

More meaningful than weights.

Pills.

Legal needles.

More important than junior college degrees.

Tutors.

What is it?

HDTV!

No self-respecting football fan can start the season without a high definition package.

Before making a purchase a year or so ago, I looked at every high definition set imaginable and came to the following conclusions. There are rumors that plasma sets might get smoke rings on the screen, or run out of gas, and that you could stick a toothpick through the screen of an LCD set, or couldn't see clearly from the side.

This appears to be the real ticket. Up to about 30 or so inches, LCD is the play. Bigger, plasma. The compromise is: both.

You absolutely must have TiVO, or the cable equivalent, so you can stop live action to either review a play or see who was sitting next to whom in Section 33. With HDTV, if you go to a game, you had better be with the right person.

Check out the Week 1 Picks: For a few answers, tune in this Saturday

I still have the behemoth rear projection HDTV. The picture is pretty darn good but I am waiting for it to crash so that I can get a Plasma or LCD. I like em big and maybe when the time comes there will be 75 inchers available.

I have been looking forward to FB season for three months now. I have been looking forward for Picker season for eight months now.

Greg : Don't buy anything until you see how you do in the picking contest...maybe you can win one.

I got a small LCD HDTV that has a built-in card-ready feature and a high definition DVD player. So far as I can tell, there's no reason to go outside until February.

High-def television is the one thing I would trade my child's college education for.

I'm sold. You conna invite me down to Tulsa for a game?
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Nothing personal.....but the last time I had a reader down for dinner, she had expensive tastes.

Looks like the wife and I will have to go TV shopping this weekend. You've convinced me...
Jeremy (5 years ago)
By the way...my lock of the week is Wake Forest +6.5 over BC. Possible outright upset here...
Wolfie (5 years ago)
Expensive? Corn dogs and onion rings?

Jeremy: be sure to take a look at Toshiba's 32" Regza LCD HDTV
WIGEM01 (5 years ago)
I may not be plumbed correctly for that sort of visit, but I'm usually a cheap date....Cheetos and Grolsch.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Twenty corn dogs and four orders of rings.

Those Toshiba's are nice all right.

Make sure you get a high-def DVD player, as all the new movies are now in that mode.

Many of the new HD sets come with a card. What that means is you have the cable or dish company program the card so that it picks up the high definition stuff. It's amazing how much is high-def now...I bet there are 15 to 20 HD channels here, movies, history, science, the works. The card is something a little bigger than a credit card and goes right in the side of a set. The card is eliminates a HD box. I had trouble with my card, though. Also, with a card, I'm not sure how good some of the channel guides are.

.....but I did hear of somebody actually running a ballpoint pen through an LCD screen!
Not Always Right (5 years ago)
Remember me? I'm the guy who told you you were wrong on Tulsa v ULM. No, you're not always right.

Nice call on Tulsa, Picker.
Not Always Right (5 years ago)
Let me save you the trouble of looking up your comments on Tulsa v ULM.

You said: "TU is in trouble at Monroe."
WRONG

Later, you said: "TU by 2."
WRONG AGAIN.

I tried to tell you you were wrong, but you were too wrongheaded to listen.
Greg (5 years ago)
Picker: I once ran a foot through a CRT screen.
Jeremy (5 years ago)
Let all of us know the first time you go 16-0 with your picks "not always right". TU did look impressive. OU better take their "A" game to Skelly that Friday night...
Not Always Right (5 years ago)
It's not that Picker is not allowed to be wrong. And I don't claim to be always right (get the name, Einstein?) It's that Picker on MANY occasions has asked "Why am I always right?" and ridicules those who dare to challenge him. Well I challenged him on Tulsa, he basically dismissed me, and now he is exposed.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
NOT ALWAYS RIGHT: I like your twin brother better, Never Right.

You should talk before a game, see how that works out.

OPENING NIGHT RECAP

TU looked pretty good, hard to tell how good beause Monroe is so atrocious.

The crowd was so lousy, ESPN had to use the Hooterville Cam, where shots of empty seats are blurred.

The TU quarterback looked good. The offense is excellent. The defense fair. The Monroe quarterback couldn't hit the end zone from the ten. The TU kicking game was terrible.

The Big 12 disgraced itself before September rolled around, Iowa State losing at home to Kent State.

The TU short punt formation with the quarterback back there is slick.

The TU defense doesn't play better, BYU will score 50.

WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Greg: You a Dallas Cowboy fan?
Ace (5 years ago)
That's just it, picker. He did "talk before the game". And it worked out just fine for him...not so well for you. What a bag of hot air.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Listen Deuce, TU was behind at the half, which is known as being in trouble.

A bad roughing the passer penalty gave TU the go-ahead touchdown, which is known as being in trouble.

Greg (5 years ago)
Picker-I am a Cowboy fan but this incident was caused by a bad episode of Gilligan's Island.
Ace (5 years ago)
Picker...reading for comprehension is a skill. You should brush up on it.
Ace (5 years ago)
Just thought I'd check in and see if the picker has any comments on the performance of Oklahoma State; weren't they 'the best offense in the nation' just a day or two ago. What a bunch of nonsense.
Greg (5 years ago)
Picker: What do you think about the Broyles gasoline arrest? I hope that this is an isolated, non-booster related incident but it could be the precursor to another major scandal as it does have that certain fishy smell to it.
Brandon (5 years ago)
So now they say Miami will give Oklahoma a real test after Miami handled Marshall 31-3. We all know North Texas wasn't good, but how good is Marshall?

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
