SAN DIEGO – The view was absolutely breathtaking. Looking at San Diego harbor and the Pacific Ocean off in the distance was simply spectacular from the top deck of the USS Bonhomme Richard, an aircraft carrier stationed at the San Diego Navy Base.
Both of the Holiday Bowl participants, Oklahoma State and Oregon, had a luncheon and took a tour of the war vessel Sunday afternoon. Upon my arrival in San Diego on Sunday morning, I met up with tag-team partner Bill Haisten to take in this bowl-sponsored event.
Unlike some other bowl sponsored tourist type events, this was not a mere photo opportunity. This was an opportunity to take a look at how another team – a more important team – goes about its work.
The 1,100 Naval and Marine officers stationed on this massive ship (it's 844 feet long, 106 feet wide, covering 2.2 acres with an approximate full load displacement of 40,500 tons) are among the thousands of men and women in all branches of the military defending our country.
Players for both the Cowboys and Ducks appreciate the opportunity they have to play football at such a high level. On this day, they appreciated the opportunity to talk with military personnel who understand what high stakes battles truly are.
