Lock of the Millennium; Upset of the Millennium
Published: 3/23/2009 4:55 PM
Last Modified: 3/23/2009 4:55 PM

Recently we gave you as our Lock of the Half Century, Oklahoma State over OU in hoops.

Here's one bigger: Syracuse over OU!

There aren't enough exclamation points in this machine to express our surprise over: OU is favored by 1!!!!!!!!!!

The Syracuse guards will take the OU guards to school and will keep them after class and will having them sitting in a corner, facing the wall, apologizing.

It is a mis-match-up of monstrous proportions. If OU loses, will the season have been a success? No, not even close. A win here, yes, the season will have played out well.

The upset is Missouri plus four points with Memphis.

We sat in the local field house and saw TU outplay Memphis. End of prediction.

We love coach Wojo. But he is under the heat lamp next season.

It was a monumental weekend in college basketball.

And something of a sad one at that.

First up, the NCAA tournament signified the death of the mid-major on the basketball landscape. When it comes to hoops, small schools need not apply for glory. The great players want to be on TV four times a week.

On something of a somber note, the Big East has officially taken over the game with its brutalizing style of play. Teams like North Carolina and Memphis look like ballet dancers by comparison. Inside the lane, the Big East is comprised of monsters of mayhem. Since the refs let the teams play until unconsciousness, foes need cut-men, not assistant coaches.

Gone are the days of style and grace, of sweeping hooks, and banked-in jumpers, of lithe and nimble artists with tremendous creative skills.

In their places are Big East brawlers and bouncers.

The new face of basketball has stitches.

and the "Best College Hoop Coach in Oklahoma" is...?

Also, several posts ago you said OU-Syr would be a 45-55 matchup. Doesn't seem like that is quiet the "mis-match-up of monstrous proportions" you claim it to be now. What changed?

The Big East broke out the Brass Knucks.

I can't believe I am saying this... but I agree. OU's guards have droped off the face of the Earth. They will indeed be "schooled" by the fighting Boeheims. The 'Cuse by at least a dozen.

The only team OU has played this season that bruises and elbows inside like Syracuse was Purdue, and the Sooners were very fortunate to get a win in New York in November. Going SIX overtimes and winning will make a team believe they can beat anyone. Yes, Louisville beat the Orange in the Big east finals, but they were spent, having played the equivalent of five games in four days, including an OT game against West Virginia the very next night after dispatching UConn in the epic 'Sixer'.They have excellent guard play, which is the key to making a long, long run in March. However, combine that with the brutal inside play they have and a 2-3 zone, well, nuff said. Both Griffins can play as physical as anyone, but who else is gonna bang inside with the tall, physical Orange trees? Wright, no...Patillo,no...Willis or Allen...Puleeze! I feel like it will be a long night at the Pyramid for the Crimson and Cream and we will wave goodbye to the best player in America, Blake Griffin, as he moves on to millions in the NBA. Make no mistake Mr. Picker, on this one you are correct, without having to tout it as the 'lock of the millennium'...it's a given...Syracuse is just plain better.

Muscle ball has been the norm for fifteen years. What bugs me is the no calls on obvious extra step and a half traveling violations. OU could win that game and probably will.

Pick, I can't remember your fab record for picks against the spread, but this is the one you have missed. OU by 3!!! The OU guards have been saving up for this one. BOOMER!!!!

What are the odds on B. Griffen having to play with gauze in his nose at some point? I've heard of a glass jaw, but this might be the first case of glass nose.
LaffALot (4 years ago)
Ignatz is right, the NCAA tourney has become “thug-U” 4 quite a while. Don’t even watch the ball movement, just watch all the shoving, pushing, grabbing, & punching underneath the paint. It happens everytime during half court offensive execution maneuvers. If one was truly callin’ the game like the old days, ALL forwards & centers for both teams would ’foul out B4 half time!

No doubt, as a group, ‘Cuse guards are better than OU’s. But IF Willie Warren continues to step it up in NCAA play, that could turn the tide towards a “Griffinized” Elite Eight appearance.

I know the ‘Snicker loves them Mizzu Tigers, but they did loose @ Texas A&M & got “humbled” @ Kansas all within the 1st week of March. Plus Memphis is bigger & has no problem running & playing full court pressure “D”. Downside is Memphis only has one quality win (Top 50 @ Gonzaga)this yr. But their free throw shooting is up to 65% in NCAA tourney play & Sallie (scorer Deluxe) & Anderson (Mr. Assist) make a lethal guard combination.

& yes, only 4 nonBCS schools received an @ large bid! A continued downward trend of “eliminating” as many nonBCS opportunities as possible. Gee, is it better TV ratings for more Big East schools in the tourney vs. all those little “David’s?” Obviously, them East Coast Biased Folk’s think so!

Mr. Picker, speaking of Big East brawlers, what did you think about Friesan Fire and Hold Me Back in their recent preps? Put them with Pioneerof and Quality Road and get ready for a cash infusion. Alas . . . a small cash infusion.

Picker's blog merely 5 days ago:

"Little East"

We'll go against the Eastern Sports Promotionan Network (ESPN) in this one: The Big East is vastly overrated.

The lowly Aggies could take out Uconn.

Seriously.

The Louisville coach is to preoccupied with mugging for the camera to win a national title.

Pitt is the best of the over-blown lot.

But we wouldn't be surprised if none of the Big East teams made the title game.

Say goodbye to credibility, Pick.

Lock of the millennium: The picker will always choose an easy game to call, hype up his pick, and make it seem like he actually made a good call.
(Sorry OU fans, but everyone with eyes can see the 'Cuse guards schooling OU's "guards". The only possible way OU wins is if BG really IS superman and goes for something like 40 and 20.

Upset of the millennium: The picker actually takes a chance on a real toss up... and wins.

LaffALot,

This year if you are looking for a conference to blame about the lack of bids to smaller conferences, blame the ACC. After the first round they had two teams left. The Big East went 6-1 after the first round, a tie with the big 12 for the most teams left, and still has the most teams left in the tourney. Whether we like it or not, the Big East really is that good this year, and it's showing in the tourney. Be prepared for V-nova to knock out one of the only two remaining ACC teams, and don't be surprised if 'Cuse knocks off the two and then the one seeds to reach the final four. They've already shown they can hang with that caliber of a team for two games, now imagine if they got more than five minutes rest between the two games.

Also, Arizona getting in over other smaller conference schools is ridiculous. I don't care if they are in the sweet 16 or not. They only played one remotely decent team to get there.

OU can win the game. Here's how. Syracuse needs to miss a lot of three-pointers.

It is simply unlikely.

The fact that the game is rated a toss-up also gives OU a chance, as the number encourages Syracuse money; and Vegas is pretty smart about reeling in people. Except when it comes to building too many condos and hotels.

The Missouri-Memphis game is nowhere near a toss-up, Memphis is a solid favorite.

The thought here is anybody TU should have beaten shouldn't beat Missouri.

Gene, Gene, the wagering machine: You see they moved Mr. Warren's horse to the Ky race? Not a good sign. I'm torn on Pioneer of the Nile.....I hate fake dirt, like the horse. Thoughts? All the experts are tossing him already. A good sign there, given the track record of TV pickers!

"picker" is a mizzou homer!! Just wish he would go back home!! Could care less what he thinks or writes!!

note to bgb and Roper64, the meds work best when you ingest them on a set schedule. Wait a minute . . . sorry . . . you "folk" in the hinterlands are like that and you don't need an excuse.
dcood (4 years ago)
It's simply not an upset either way. Yes, vegas is good at reeling people in but the game is virtually a pick 'em. They don't make sucker lines as pick 'em. You also dont win 29 games, and last time I checked OU had, with crappy anything. Also, so much for your season-long put down of Big 12 hoops, three in the sweet 16, only conference to go undefeated in the first round...and as a sidenote, one team in the NIT semis.

Note to Gene M. Sorry to pick on your "little brother". Drugs? Just stating my opinion, Pin Head!

The Picker (4 years ago)
Attention pinheads: OU can win the Syracuse game. Know why? Of course you don't.

Here's why: Because Vegas loves OU. And Vegas is very good. Vegas is saying with its point spread of a virtual pick-em game: bring on the Syracuse money.

To pick Syracuse, you have to hope it hits three-pointers and hope OU misses three-pointers. The lone constant in the game is The Poser getting his 25 to 30.

So with the upset pick of Syracuse, we're taking on the brains of Vegas as well as numerous of you fatheads.

Brackets? Brackets are for tourists. What's the thrill of picking all the favorites?

At least it gives the chumps a chance to say they got something right.

Pick:

Your buddy, Sittler, completely called you out this morning. A perfect dis. You can't let that slide. Please tell me when and where the fisticuffs will be!
The Picker (4 years ago)
Obviously we, along with billions of others, didn't hear anything about that.

All we do here at the Picks is pick winners better than anybody in the history of handicapping.

We can't speak to other issues.
