Long faces over the Longhorn Network

So it appears the leadership at Texas A&M is finally taking notice of the ESPN-sponsored Longhorn Network.

According to former colleague Brent Zwerneman with the Houston Chronicle/San Antonio Express-News, A&M system regents have added a debriefing about the channel to their meeting this week.

Take a look at the story here.

As has been the case during the entire realignment process, the Aggies seem to be a day late and a dollar short -- unless of course their strategy was to play the role of put-upon little brother so well as to make a move to the SEC a necessity.

For the record, a move to the SEC has always seemed better in theory than in practice. A&M would still have to compete with Texas for in-state recruits no matter what conference it played in and much of its football recruiting advantage would likely be negated by giving SEC teams a better foothold in Texas.

As for Oklahoma and its bid for a network, Sooner AD Joe Castiglione sounds like someone trying to manage expectations over a deal that will likely pale in comparison to Texas'.

Read Guerin Emig's take here.

I'm not sure what to make of the Longhorn Network, anyway. It's been a tremendous moneymaker, obviously, but as a recruiting tool its impact is somewhat dubious.

It has rights to two football games but no distribution agreements. It's just a matter of time, right? Well the NFL Network, with more programming and the backing of the United States' most popular sports league, still isn't on a handful of cable providers nearly eight years after its launch.

But no matter the end result, OU's current strategy seems the best -- study your options, without showing your weakness.

It seems the posturing of both A&M and OU has paid off--at least temporarily. In what I'm sure UT will call an act of defiance, Dan Beebe actually stood up for the rest of the conference by shelving both the airing of the conference game and high school games on the Longhorn Network.

Somewhere in the distance, ESPN execs are plotting their revenge.

During this past BreakUpScare..UT was able to see a Dan Bebee that could be manipulated.
I understand Broyles and Arkansas's frustration during SouthwesternConferenceDays!
