Longhorns up to old tricks

Two and a half years ago, sick-and-tired-of-losing-to-OU coach Mack Brown raided Auburn's staff for the hottest assistant in the country. Defensive coordinator Gene Chizik arrived at Texas, and the Longhorns promptly won the 2005 and '06 Red River Shootouts by holding the Sooners to a total of 22 points.

Last season, Chizik left to take over Iowa State. Brown tried promoting Duane Akina to D-coordiator. It didn't work out. OU put 414 yards and 28 points on the Horns in taking back the Golden Hat last Oct. 6.

Naturally, Brown responded by stealing the hottest assistant in the country from Auburn. This time, he's Will Muschamp, and he's being paid $425,000 (OU D-coordinator Brent Venables, by comparison, makes $315,000) to beat the Sooners.

Will it pay off? Maybe. Muschamp knows what he's doing.

Then again, Austin American Statesman columnist Kirk Bohls has a couple points worth making as the Orangebloods count down to spring practice: "We're not sure if Vondrell McGee or Darrell Scott will line up behind Colt McCoy or if any Texas defensive back can cover a receiver."
