Looking for Answers from Te'o, Irish

There’s a disconnect among those of us over 30, and in my case way over 30, to the Manti Te’o story.

At this point, it has become evident that Te’o was the victim of a hoax.

However, there remains a long list of questions about whether he played along to get sympathy, in a bid for the Heisman Trophy, and why didn’t Notre Dame do anything about it for several weeks leading up to the national championship game.

We admit that we don’t understand the whole idea of an Internet girlfriend. I’ll take the word of several 20-somethings that it happens.

However, once Te’o became aware of the hoax, why did it take nearly three weeks, and a handful of interviews during collegiate awards shows, before he notified Notre Dame?

Then, why did Notre Dame apparently slow-play the issue?

No one had done anything to make this public, and to take responsibility, before Deadspin, an Internet site, finally made it public.

The article forced Te’o and Notre Dame to admit what had happened.

We may actually feel sorry for Te’o in this hoax, but we’re very skeptical of how he and Notre Dame handled it.

If it was just a cruel and vicious hoax, and that’s what it appears to be, then why not come out and admit it? Get it out there.

Te’o continued to play along and Notre Dame kept quiet. It looks very suspicious.

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t understand how you could have a girlfriend you’ve never met, but I’m 59 and struggle everyday to understand tweets, facebooking, etc.

However, even giving Te’o the benefit of the doubt, there’s still the issue of why did he wait nearly two months, and after a website exposed the alleged hoax, before he admitted what happened.

There’s still a lot of questions out there for Te’o and Notre Dame to answer. Te’o will have to answer those questions for NFL scouts.

We’re hoping someone gets a few answers from Notre Dame, too.

When he sacked Landry Jones in the OU/ND game, he jumped up and started taunting; Landry is one of the least tauntable people around. Ref pulled him aside told him to cool it, should have been a penalty. Alabama squashed him like a bug several times in championship game and no one taunted him; but what goes around, comes around. Relentless taunting!

IMO, there is no way Te'o didn't know about the hoax. He is now trying to pass the blame onto someone else. He said he met the girl at a game...lie #1. And don't play along with it because it is gaining you valuable publicity for the Heisman race. Then his family covers for him...I understand trying to help him save face, but now the public thinks they are part of the the planning. Te'o, COME CLEAN. Ask Oprah to do an on camera interview shortly after the draft and come clean.

I'm with you, John. How can you have a girlfriend for three years that you've never met face to face? Strange deal to say the least.
