Losing no Shame but OSU must Get A Lot Better
Published: 9/1/2007 10:28 PM

There's nothing wrong with Oklahoma State that can't be fixed by simply getting tougher – everywhere.
That is not out of the question, even though the Cowboys appeared pretty soft in the second half of a 35-14 loss at Georgia on Saturday night.
OSU's defense, a sore spot in coach Mike Gundy's three years as coach, was awful at times. The Cowboys seemed totally unable to stop the Bulldogs in the middle portion of the first half and then got put away early in the fourth quarter.
The Cowboys were easy pickings for Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford. That's disappointing because no one has been comparing Stafford to Peyton Manning.
But the Cowboys had their moments on defense.
One has to figure OSU will work out the kinks in their offense. The Cowboys have far too much firepower to be held to two touchdowns.
And, the kicking game was actually very good except those two mistakes that led to 14 Georgia points.
So, can you write it off as a bad night or is this a trend?
It is far too early to make a long-term analysis.
And, if you are going to believe OSU is doomed because of this loss, you are not respecting the Southeastern Conference.
Winning on the road in the SEC is darn near impossible.
So, as OSU coach Mike Gundy said, the Cowboys have a long ways to go.
He believes the Cowboys have to get better in all areas. He believes OSU must be tougher.
Saying the Cowboys weren't ready for the big time was accurate in Georgia.
The big question is will OSU be ready for the big time when it goes to Nebraska, Texas A&M and Oklahoma later this season.

Does this loss sting? Sure.

But, the more I think about it, the more I think that we needed this loss. Our heads were in the clouds after hearing a summer's worth of hype, and we paid for it by taking things for granted. I still think an 8-4 season isn't out of the realm of possibility. I think we'll be fine. Heck, most teams would trade anything to NOT have our road schedule this year.

And, look at it this way: At least we're not Michigan fans right now! :)

Needed this loss!!! I am a life long Cowboy fan and I have never heard such a STUPID comment in my life.

My head wasn't in the clouds. I believed that we had the athletes to compete. What I didn't know is we still don't have the discipline or the skill. Too many penalties. Too many blown coverages. Too many Cowboys out of position. Too many Cowboys trolling for big hits instead of wrapping up their man and simply putting them on the turf. Too many 10-20 yard passes fired into the dirt. Not the end of the world, but disappointing enough to make me feel "Here we go again". Seemed to be the same old song and dance for OSU.

Actually our DL coach and recruiting coordinator, Rodney Garner, has compared Matt Stafford to Peyton Manning several times. Rodney was on staff at UT during Peyton's last two seasons and said if Matthew continues to devote himself to studying film as he has so far, he is going to be "that" (referring to PM) kind of QB.
I have to agree with Ken. OSU never needs a loss for "reality check".

Regardless, very very disappointing loss. I really felt this game would come down to the wire & could have gone either way. Not so. The well coached Bulldogs physically dominated in the 2nd half.

Unless our Defense has a "miracle makeover", I'm afraid we're looking at another 7-5 season. If you can't push pressure on a qb or not leave a WR open within 5/yards, unfortunately you are not ready for "prime time."

Either 2 things will happen in the next few years. Either the current coaching staff will recruit like "mad" to fill the interior defensive line positions with studs & coach DB's to not leave a guy uncontested, OR there will be a new coaching staff alltogether. Am I starting a Gundy or Beckman need to "go" campaign. Absolutely not. However, it does began with the top. The Defense needs to seriously step up or the Cowboys WILL NEVER compete for a Big 12 South Championship.

It's really that simple.....

I don't understand why no one is talking about the horrible play of OSU's special teams. DeForest is a joke. The last two years, he screams and yells and then the special teams either can't hit a PAT or can't cover a punt. Special teams cost OSU the game Saterday night more than any other phase of the game.

Our defense is not as bad as advertised on the message boards. Other than the two miscues on the punt team that allowed undefendable field position leading to the first and last Georgia touchdowns, our defense was holding their own. It was our vaunted offense that really sputtered. In the FAU game, our defensive front and backers really stuffed the run. I expect the same at Troy. Two questions remain for me, which I will have to see before commenting. First, how well will our secondary defend against the passing attack of a pretty good Troy aerial offense, and second, how well will our starting QB and/or backup play?
