Lulu's, Hard Rock and Mobile

At 10 p.m. the night before the GMAC Bowl, in the headquarters hotel of the University of Tulsa, the lobby bar at the alum hotel was empty except for two media guys and two medical guys.
It was hard to find anyone from TU or Bowling Green the night before the game.
Yet, the game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Sunday night was a sellout. A week from now, another packed house will watch the Senior Bowl.
Much can be learned from Mobile. You don't necessarily think of Mobile when you think of sports towns. Yet, in a two-week period, the Mobilians will fill a staidum near downtown to watch two football games that don't involve any local teams.
In fact, the GMAC Bowl has made it clear from the start. Unlike most bowls, who rely on alumni support to fill the bowl stadiums, the GMAC has so much local support that team support isn't that important.
And, don't look down your nose at the Mobile area. An hour south is Gulf Shores, wide beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. Don't miss Lulu's, a great beach bar owned by Jimmy Buffet's sister Lucy.
Then, an hour west if Biloxi, home to several terrific casiono resorts including Beau Rivage and the Hard Rock. The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, which was set to open the week Katrina hit the coast, is a beautiful new hotel and casino.
So, there's plenty of to do. The folks here support the game.
And, the GMAC has a history of high-scoring games. So, there are worse places to be in early January than the GMAC Bowl with 70 degrees and sunshine.

Of course there were no alums at the hotel bar at 10 p.m. Saturday night. We were all across the street in the Convention Center, where the pep rallies and alumni parties were held. I'm amazed that Klein stayed by himself in the hotel while the TU party was going on across the street. We had a great time.

As a TU alum and current resident of the city of Mobile, I would just like to say thank you to the folks of Mobile and Tulsa. WOW! What an experience was the whole weekend. The TU fans showed the city of Mobile how true sports fans conduct themselves. The folks of Mobile showed the fans from Bowling Green and TU how to be sports hosts. The people of Mobile responed perfectly to being hit by this hurricane.
