Luper’s Auburn call tested Herschel Sims’ loyalty
Published: 2/3/2011 11:15 PM

Received a text message today from an Oklahoma State fan. It read, “What Curtis Luper did was dirty.”

The fan referred to Luper – a former OSU running back who worked as a Cowboy assistant in 2005-08 – as apparently having pitched a last-minute scholarship offer at five-star running back Herschel Sims, who had been committed to OSU since April.

The offer was confirmed by Steve Warren, Sims’ coach at Abilene (Texas) High School.

Luper now coaches running backs at national champion Auburn. He is said to have telephoned Sims on Monday night. The response of Sims is said to have been, in effect, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

On Wednesday, Sims signed with Oklahoma State.

Luper made a late play for an important Cowboy recruit. Was it dirty? It certainly wasn’t illegal, but you can safely presume that Luper’s relationship with OSU has been destroyed.

This is what we learned:

Herschel Sims is loyal to Oklahoma State.

Curtis Luper is not.

Well, it shouldn't surprise anyone. NCAA coaches are just barely above Plaintiff's attorneys on the slimeball scale ... barely. (see: Todd Graham)

A big DUH on this one. Auburn pays the bills. You're loyal to the hand that feeds you.

Lupe has been gone two seasons. Nothing wrong about it. I would bet Coach would say the same thing if he were asked. Gillespie told Sims to stay and that was classy, but he won't be doing anything other than his job if he happens to recruit some of the same kids we are next year.

Auburn is a joke thanks to $cam Newton. They will be under investigation just like USC. Only a matter of time.

This shows that Sims may be the real thing. I would be more comfortable if there had been top-notch programs that went after Sims. Without an OC, the chum was in the water. However, Coaches Sources told me a while back that there was no love lost between Luper and Gundy.

That's his job, why wouldn't he?

I would have had no problem with Luper recruiting an OSU commitment a few weeks before signing day. But to call right before Signing Day ? Whatever Luper is bitter about, it's a sad thing. There are two sides to every story and I could have respected his, but this wasn't a classy way from him to go about things. For sure, it was about Luper, not about Herschel Sims. If it was at all about Herschel Sims, they would've been in contact with him a lot sooner. So, there's a respect in which you could say it was dirty

Auburn better be careful in gaining too many enemies. Something smells fishy out there in Auburn land. It appears the SEC programs play on the edges a bit and each others' aggressive play is ignored within certain parameters. But once you cross certain lines, all bets are off and it will look like the old SWC ratting each other out. Also, if Trooper Taylor had stayed at OSU I bet he would have landed some really big recruits and, eventually, some NCAA sanctions.

If I am employed by someone, character would dictate that I am loyal and work for my employer's betterment...unless that employer is World War II era Germany. There is nothing wrong with that coach's loyalty. QUESTION: Would OU coach Bob Stoops be getting the same bad press if a top Iowa recruit came to OU instead? If you say yes, you better turn in your driver's license since you are incapable of making proper decisions.

It looks like Auburn may lose Cyrus Kouandjio to Alabama. Good for them.
