Mad Mike is back to make OU-Mizzou a little more fun

The best moment in the history of the Oklahoma-Missouri football series isn't Joe Washington' 71-yard touchdown run from 1975, Billy Sims' 70-yard gallop from '78, or Chris Chester's cross-armed catch in '02.

It isn't anything Kellen Winslow, James Wilder or Steve Pisarkiewicz ever did for the Tigers.

It's this, and it isn't even close:

Well, Mad Mike DeArmond, beat writer par excellence for the Kansas City Star, has picked another fight with the Insane Sooner Posse. He has written a blog entitled "As OU has twice proven with MU: Made-up stuff is great kindling."

The Sooners would rather remember their '02 nail-biter in Columbia for Matt McCoy's fake field goal TD pass to Chester.

DeArmond?

"In 2002 a fake story replete with things Missouri coach Gary Pinkel never said – which the OU players were convinced appeared under my byline in the Star – was the vehicle for the Sooners to get their mad on."

The Sooners would rather remember their '08 Big 12 championship hydraulic pressing of Mizzou for their start-to-finish dominance

DeArmond?

"(Sam) Bradford told ABC sideline reporter Lisa Salter (it's Salters, actually) that he was angry that Missouri players called OU's two 2007 victories over MU 'flukes.' Never mind that no Missouri player or coach was ever quoted as saying that on radio, TV or even – as far as I can ascertain – in an Internet blog or Twitter message."

At this point, it's probably worth noting that DeArmond delights in poking sticks in the sides of certain fan bases, especially those lathered up over Kansas basketball. It's what makes him Mad Mike.

And since he didn't blog anything untrue – the Sooners really did manufacture some of their motivational juices in '02 and '08 – I'm all for his presenting a delicious subplot to this year's game.

Still, you gotta think this day is coming: After one of these Missouri games someone's going to ask a Sooner for his true source of motivation. He's not going to say "disrespect" or "it gets us a step closer to our goals" or "we just wanna improve each and every week."

He's going to crack a wicked grin, chuckle and say, "Honestly, we just wanna muzzle Mizzou's Mad Mike."

The Mizzou players absolutely said it was a fluke. Chase Daniel said "we gave it away", referring to late turnovers in the 07 game in Norman that led to OU's 41-31 win. This Mad Mike character doesn't research very well.

Nice writing and funny. However, "Mad Mike" must be hearing impaired. Chase Daniels was very much the poster child for bulletin board material.

Mad Mike needs to work on his memory... Chase Daniel in fact did say it was a fluke that OU beat them twice before Curtis Loftin and company abused them for a 3rd time in the Big XII title game. I used to love to see Daniel pout after a turnover or not picking up needed yardage, he was worse than that kid in 'The Toy' when he was gettin beat.

Saying we gave it away through turnovers isn't the same as saying it was a fluke. It's staing whwat exactly happened. Missouri was winning at the half by 10 as I recall. We had a fumble on our own 5 that turned was recoverred for a TD. Then a drop td pass in the endzone by Chase Coffman (surest hands ever at MU) followed by Daniel's interception. Thats not the same as a fluke. Mad Mike is correct, but why point it iut???

Gerald McCoy said it was a slap in the face for MU to have OU as their homecoming. He must not realize Oct. is the only time to have Homecoming and we're in a 4 game stretch where OU is the ONLY home game from Oct 4. thru Nov. 14th. Mizzou didn't have a choice. If I was OU I'd think it was pretty cool.
