Main Playoff Gripe Makes No Sense

Numerous people have long stated that the chief drawback to a playoff system in college football, even a mini-playoff involving four teams, would be the way the regular season could be diminished.

College basketball is used as example of a boring regular season.

First off, college basketball and college football are different sports. And actually, the college basketball regular season is hotly contested by the best teams looking for high seeds. Nobody supports dogs in any sport.

Adding more teams to the college football national championship picture would increase the importance of the regular season, not detract from it. More teams in the tournament, the more intense the competition would be. Rotten scheduling will be severely punished. Big non-conference wins by big teams will be golden, it's why OU got in over Auburn in the BCS's worst moment.

In sum, the only reason not to support a college football playoff of any type is because you're a coach or an AD who would catch more heat for not getting in, given more available spots.

Right on, Pick. Always an excuse to cover up their lousy mismanagement of the sport in the past and the start of excuses for continuing mismanagement.
PS. Shouldn't the last word in your article be 'spots'? I kinda like being the grammar/spelling police sometimes.

OU got in over Auburn because of the strength of their schedule. Both teams were deserving If you recall, 4 teams were undefeated and deserving. Don't use the argument that OU didn't belong there because of the blowout loss to USC. USC could've blown out Auburn and we would be saying today that OU belonged there instead. Point is, we'll never know because the teams were not allowed to "play it out". In that year, it probably would've been OU-Auburn and USC-Utah winners playing for the NC.
The previous year (2003) was more controversial. Of course, USC "thinks" they belonged. OU lost the BIG 12 championship but they were still ranked #1 because of schedule. And they were so close to winning that game against LSU. BCS has needed this for many years.

Good points soonerjerk. Exactly my thoughts. I am sure Auburn would have faired no better than OU in that game. I have often wished in hindsight Auburn had played them and not us, to save the embarrassment.

It's true, coaches will now have more pressure to get in the top four.

Agreed, Mr. Picker. I would add one more rule: A team must win at least 8 games (with no more than one win over a D-1 FCS team counting toward the team's record) to make it to a bowl game. This would put a stop to all of these mediocre bowl games.
