Major Collapse Predicted

One of our specialties is picking trends, specifically, the ends of trendy runs.

Oftentimes these Mayan-like forecasts turn out to be the opposite of what the media at large thinks.

One of the first predicted trend reversals concerned the OU women's basketball team. After coach Coale resurrected the program, the OU women made a run at a national title. The homer crew based in OKC proclaimed the OU women to be one of the nation's elite. We said hang on just a second there. It appeared to us that OU did particularly great because of one sensational player, guard Dales. We said that one great player didn't make a coach or a program.

Last night: Uconn 125, OU women 18.

Something like that.

Three years ago, four, we stated that the stunning Maria Sharapova had outgrown the game of tennis, literally, and predicted a fall from major tournament success. And, having grown to about six-feet, three, she appears, in fact, too lengthy to overcome the women about as tall as the net, short players wildly mobile.

A year or so ago, we said that Tiger was not the best golfer ever, Jack was. And it appears that Tiger's five-hour home-school rehab course didn't quite take. He'll be fortunate to win another major.

The latest vibe concerns the NBA.

See if you agree that the concensus of pro hoop teams currently fall in this order of skill:

1. Boston.
2. LA Puddles.
3. San Antonio.
4. Miami.
5. Orlando.

We predict Boston will withdraw from glory. No way it wins it all this year.

The absolute only thing that will keep the Celtics from winning it all is injuries, which is a real concern now. That's the only thing that kept them from #18 last year also as a) regular season injuries kept them from a chance at home court advantage in the Finals (didn't matter during the rest of the playoffs, obviously) and b) Game 7 of the Finals would have been completely different had Perk not gotten hurt in Game 6. The injury situation will be helped tremendously with Delonte set to return tomorrow.

It should be noted, however, that the injury situation hasn't seemed to hurt the C's against the Heat yet this season. Thank you, Rajon Rondo!

Mr. Picker, Tiger will win a major this year and eventually surpass Jack. He has too much talent and too many years left.

I'm a Laker fan and I have to say that I'm a bit worried about how they are going to do come playoff time.

Look, we all know that teams "turn it on" when the playoffs come.

But the teams that actually use that reason for their bad play in February are usually the ones that forget how to turn it on down the stretch.

Tiger's spit was not what I would call a class act, not even close to when Sergio spit in the cup, but, did I see someone spit on the green Sunday? I'm not sure if it was the winner or not, but I do know I saw one of the players spit after he putted out while walking off the green. Nothing was said about his spit, or if he was actually off the green. I would like to see a replay on this. Not that I am defending the "Cheetah", but I know what I saw.

Does anybody really care about women’s b-ball?

The story in women’s tennis is Kim Clijsters making a Huge ‘comeback after having a kid, has won 2 US Opens & just won the Aussie @ age 27, pretty remarkable.

Tiger is 4 back of Jack, only 35 yrs old, has @ least 15+ competitive years left. Jack won 3 major’s in his 40’s & 4 more in his late 30’s. Tiger’s best chance @ winning more Major’s is @ Augusta (He’s won 4 times there) & a few British Open’s (where weather, limited rough, & wide open playing conditions can play to his advantage)

Lakers better watch out for Mav’s or they’ll end up being a 3 seed & have to play “potentially” 3 game 7’s on the visitor's home court to win a title again. That’s ‘tuff for any team to do, just ask Boston last year.

No Thunder inside muscle, no Championship hopes.

There are only 1 or 2 elites in women's college basketball. OU is a very good team, not elite, But Coach Coale is as good a coach as anyone could ask for. Who else gets what she does out of her talent?

I couldn't care less about golf or Tiger woods.

Who is out there that can beat San Antonio in a best of 7?

Laffalot hits it on the head with your statement about womens hoops...maybe Sherri the Diva at OU wont shoot her mouth off next time about a home and home with the best womens bb program of all time. Thats a long flight to go take a tail whippin by 41!

New, it's going to hard for Boston to play 4 on 5 throughout the playoffs, pitifully as Rondo shoots. Of course, if he's dishing dunks, that makes up for a lot.

Gene-o, ok, here we go, a contribution to a favorite charity, I say Tiger goes zero for the majors.

The OU Women's Basketball program has been to 7 Sweet 16s (4 without Dales) and 3 Final Fours (2 of them without Dales) in 14 seasons under Coale. A powerhouse? Not exactly. However, it's still had quite a bit of success and it hasn't been simply because of one player.

I don't see the Mavs competing for the NBA Title. They lack an inside scoring presence (and they don't have a Michael Jordan type of player). Tyson Chandler is a rebounder and a defender. Also, Dirk can't make big shots in the clutch. He's got height but is still too much of a jump shooter. Dirk tends to choke in the 4th quarter of big games.

Has anybody else noticed, or is it our imagination: Do OU fans talk more about the past than the present?
Gene M (last year)
Mr. Picker, I accept your very benevolent offer. How about the American Cancer Society? If Tiger wins two, you can add a contribution to the Oklahoma Golf Foundation.
By the way, I still owe you for that Ryder Cup thing and will take care of that one soon.
Some of the pay-offs at Oaklawn are very nice and I trust you are hitting your share.
