Manning's Hurricane now 3-0 as freshman Wright records a double-double

After trailing by eight points during Friday night’s first half, the University of Tulsa basketball team rallied to take a 25-24 halftime lead and went on to win 63-51 at the University of San Diego.

In 24 minutes off the bench, freshman forward D’Andre Wright recorded his first college double-double – team-high totals of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Rashad Smith and James Woodard each scored 12 points for the Golden Hurricane.

At 7 p.m. Central on Saturday, TU faces Cal State Northridge at USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion. TU is 3-0. During the nine previous seasons, TU has been 4-0 only once (2009-10).

“We had 21 turnovers and only five assists, but we won the game because we rebounded the ball and guarded,” Hurricane coach Danny Manning said by telephone. “If we rebound and play defense, we have a chance to be competitive in every game.”

After an 8-of-21 first half against San Diego, TU shot 50 percent from the field during the second half. The Hurricane was 19-of-23 on free throws and had a 39-26 rebounding advantage over the taller Toreros of the West Coast Conference. Against TU’s pressuer defense, San Diego (2-2) shot just 28 percent after halftime.

“It was a good way for us to test our interior play against a team with some size,” Manning said. “D’Andre was outstanding for us tonight, obviously.”

In three games, Tulsa has had three different leading scorers – Woodard with 28 points against LSU-Shreveport, Smith with 23 against Northern Kentucky and Wright with 14 on Friday.

“That’s how the system is designed – for these guys to execute their assignments, and for the ball to be moved to open shooters,” Manning said.

Tulsa freshman starting guard Shaq Harrison had his right eye poked by the finger of a San Diego defender during the second half and was assisted to the Hurricane locker room. His status for Saturday’s Cal State Northridge game is uncertain, Manning said.

Congrats to TU and Coach Manning.

Great job and congratulations to the TU players and Coach Manning. Winning on the road, especially with such a young team, is already quite an accomplishment. So glad to have a reason to be excited about TU basketball again. In comparison, the College of Charleston has lost their last two games, in which they were favored to win both. Thank goodness we don't have to put up with Wojoke anymore. Go Hurricane!!!
