March Mildness

College basketball is presently a weak fifth behind the Thunder, spring football, golf and NASCAR.

Here's why.

One, there's no great team around here. Kansas is good. But it won't win it all. The west had dropped off the basketball map. Even Gonzaga is weak.

Two, the one and done rule has pretty much ruined college basketball. Even old windbag Vitale has a difficult time justifying all the guys who hang out at Kentucky playing video games for one year, and then move on to pro ball with gradepoints of zero. Only Duke hangs onto good players for more than a couple of years.

What could save this year's tournament?

Two things.

A stark underdog charging from nowhere to the last 16.

Or gambling. Rather, contests and office pools.

On its own, this sport has pretty much had it until five minutes remain in the semi-sweet 16 games.

Make college basketball sixth.

Last 5 minutes of any close college basketball game takes 45 minutes to finish!
Its easier to stay @ home & watch a game on Tivo You can fast forward through all the timeouts, standing around, & free throws.

As a sports fan in general who enjoys sports because of the COMPETITION & the journey to the end of a game, I find it appalling that a sports writing conglomerate representing my one time hometown would write that gambling would save the NCAA Tournament....

I don't gamble, I played basketball & I watch it for the enjoyment it gives me.... I understand the difficulty of the game & what it takes to put that ball in the basket with someone trying to stop you but they can't, that's the thrill of it, the difficulty of it.... If it was easy, everybody could do it, so said Tom Hanks in "A League of Their Own"....

To write that the only way to enjoy a sport is to gamble on it is sad & harmful.... There are those out there that believe in what your group writes just because you have a forum to spew your supposedly informed insights....

Do I watch college basketball ???? No I don't, I saw my beloved Tulsa Hurricane basketball program burned to the ground & then the OU implosion stole away what was left of my college hoops enjoyment....

Basketball, I love the game, playing it, watching it, teaching it & I do it because it's my passion & to see a bunch of goobers such as yourselves write in a CITY NEWSPAPER that you only have to watch to last couple of minutes to know what happened is throwing down the gauntlet....

Football is a nice sport to pass the time on until basketball season begins....

College basketball is DONE! I've been saying this for two years now. The college game is a mere shadow of what it used to be.

There's a front page story on USA Today confirming what we said yesterday -- college hoops is sinking fast. The regular season means nothing. Near-illiterates on the way to a pro team start for many clubs.

While on the subject of craziness, here's further proof that homers have zero credibility.

At the OSU pro tryout day, they give homers stopwatches!

One OSU homer had receiver Blackmon running a 40-yard dash in something like 3.9, or roughly the speed of light. The OSU homer said his stopwatch actually had the OSU catcher running the 40 in less than 4.4!

Then the pro timers put out the real number: 5.1. Good, not other-worldly.

A homer with a stopwatch should be against the law.

Wonder if the dropped passes by Blackmon will catch the eye of the Pro scouts more than the 'unofficial' official 40 times?

The homers are now saying that Weeden is a first-round pick. High as 12, 13, no lower than 20-something.

Please.

Of course there is an intrinsic beauty to most, if not all, sports, but betting on them makes them more interesting. I mean, put Hofstra and Lafayette on tv and I'll be watching the lesbian channel with a bag of popcorn...but give me six points either way and I'll be watching Hof/LA and pacing the last six minutes. Sports betting, whether you like it or not, has been with us for a couple of thousand years.

And I heard an OKIE AGGIE say that the OSU pitcher hit a line drive up the middle and was hit in the back of the head sliding into second. Grain of salt, folks.

Exactly.

I'm guessing redriver fell off his soapbox and can't reply to your insightful post; in fact I'd lay 2-1 odds on it. . . ;)

Does anyone else think that 40 times aren't the best way to judge speed? Dan Patrick made a good point a week ago. Besides kickoff teams, how often do players run 40 yards on a play? There's nothing wrong with measuring 40 yard dashes, but they also need to measure 10 and 20 yard dashes.

Mr. Picker,
What are your thoughts on the 4 play-in games this week. I think it's ridiculous and that they should go back to 64 teams.

He welcomes the competition.
