Sports writers aren't supposed to have favorites, but -- what the heck -- Marshall Gordon is one of my favorites.
Since the Tulsa World went to a beat system (one guy is assigned to cover one team all season long) in 1995, I have been the beat writer for Tulsa and Oklahoma State football.
While it may be somewhat less than professional to have favorite players, I do have a few favorite human beings who just so happened to wear football jerseys on Saturday and one of them is Gordon.
Every time I interviewed Gordon during his playing days at TU, he always turned preacher on me and tried to get me to go to his church. I never did, but I respected him for trying.
I saw Gordon at TU's spring game on Saturday and he looked like he could still be playing varsity ball. I can't remember the exact details of what he's doing nowadays, but it seems like he's in thick with a church somewhere, which doesn't surprise me one iota.
Gordon has two claims to fame. He is a cousin of R.W. McQuarters, who played at OSU and still plays in the NFL. And he might be the only guy in college football history who suffered a season-ending injury because he lost a fight with a soft drink machine. He worked for a cola company one offseason and got an arm sliced up pretty badly while delivering a vending machine, if memory serves correctly.
Hopefully, Gordon used up all his bad luck that day. Have a good life, Marshall.

and Marshall had one of the 4th quarter TD catches in the '95 OSU come-from-behind game. He is now pastor of Crossover Bible Church.

Your memory is perfect, Jimmie, despite having slept since that accident happened.
Marshall came back for his senior season after that injury, but it kept him out of a lot of the summer/pre-season work. As a result, he didn't surpass his sterling junior season.
He was a sensational player before his injury, and I don't doubt he's an even finer man now than he was then, and that was pretty awesome.

Marshall was not just a gifted athlete, but a truly kind person. A former Hornet, this basketball and football star personified the ideal student-athlete. He was kind to those around him and was always a pleasure to be around.
Although not close friends, he always had a kind word and smile to share.
I appreciate that others recognize the bright and wonderful examples we have contributing in and around our community.
