Mayday

Ho, ho, ho, here's a good one: The so-called experts say OU suffered from "bad tackling" against light-weight UAB.

Bad tackling has been around forever.

It's not like making too many penalities.

Bad tackling is caused by bad defenders.

In related news, quarterback Thompson needs to find some touch and not fire all passes full-throttle. He could put somebody's eye out.

The zebras robbed UAB on the punt fumble.

Is OU a lock to finish above .500 next year?

Also from week one:

Mississippi State should drop football.

The Big 12 is not a top four conference.

Texas is on a course for world domination.

West Virginia is not an elite team.

Lou Holtz sounds like Sylvester the cat.

Mark May is a pinhead.

Conservative play-calling loses.

Pete Carroll is far and away the best college coach in the country; the Notre Dame man is second. Third is a mile back.

Arkansas played for its manhood last week. Break out the party skirts.

Regarding Mayday: My problem is that I feel I know why you make the comments you make, but I find I don't disagree with those not meant to anger.
However, the fumble statement pertaining to the punt return is confusing. In 30 years of H.S. football coaching, I have been told numerious times that the play ends when the offical sees it over. Not when the official blows his whistle, nor a knee touches. This may date back to the days of whistles being carried on the officals wrists or evening the cork being soaked causing a malfunction.
Anyway the official obviously saw Smith down. Keep up the good effort!

Somebody said the whistle wasn't blown until two minutes after the ball was loose.

Maybe not that long.

But nobody heard it blow before.

Regarding "bad tackling," we stand by the premise that bad players make bad tacklers.

I enjoyed your comments and think its about time that you are going to engage in a dialogue with your fans. We can provide a much needed attitude adjustment.
I suggest that Lou Holtz is really Alfalfa, all grown up.
I would also like to suggest that to fully understand your Blogger, Jack Kiper, we will need a translator. What was it he said, exactly?

Gene, I'm here for youse guys, pal.

Lou Holtz on the ESPN set reminds us of that comedian who smashes watermelons, what's his name, Galagher?

Don't you know the crew members have plastic sheets over their heads.

Are you the Gene owing us a steak dinner?

A much needed attitude adjustment for The Picker? Good luck, Gene.

Dear Wolfie: Get back in your den.
Gene (6 years ago)
Picker, I am the "Gene" who owes you a libation of your choice. How did you expand that into a dinner?

Gene (6 years ago)
. . . and one more thing; leave Wolfie alone as he is on the side of Goodness. Wolfie, we have a tough job ahead, when do we start?

Gene: You've owed it seven years.
Wolfie (6 years ago)
Gene: Thank you for coming to my defense, but be careful; The Picker might accuse you of bad tackling.
Echo (6 years ago)
I love this blogging deal. I want more from Wolfie, Gene and Picker. It sure beats what is on tv.

You go guys.:)

Echo and Wolfie, we need to be careful not to hurt the Picker's feelings this week. Did you see the list of people who out picked him? The list resembles the phone book. Perhaps the Editor will need to run a Special Section of the paper on Wednesdays to list the winners.

Is it true that Gene, Wolfie and Echo are ESPN anchors and a Colorado coach who wish to conceal their identities?

Some writers get groupies named Foxy.
We get Wolfie.

Dear Picker: Consider yourself lucky.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
