Scott Verplank was tickled to shoot just 1 over par in Thursday's first round of the Masters. By the time all the first-round scores had rolled in, it was evident that Verplank was justifiably tickled.
Augusta National is playing harder than Elly Mae's biscuits. The course was Tiger-proofed (length was added) after Tiger Woods blew the field away a few years ago. But golfers have never seen this Augusta National because it is both dry and long.
In the past, there had been enough rain before or during the Masters to soften greens. The greens are firm and fast this year and the course seems to be rather unforgiving.
Only nine golfers shot under par Thursday. Every former Masters champ was at par or above. You would think that past experience at Augusta National would help the ex-champs. But, thanks to a perfect storm (or, more accurately, lack of storms), they have never played the course when it was this mean.
