Media Says: OU to Be Greater Than Greatest
Published: 4/13/2009 4:53 PM
Last Modified: 4/13/2009 4:53 PM

Before we issue the following prediction, here's this update on how we're doing.

Last August in a special football section of this paper, we predicted that Florida would defeat OU in the national championship game.

Then we had Texas with OU.

Then we hit Florida over OU, missing by one point.

Then we had the Steelers over Arizona in the Super Bowl right on the number.

Then we picked North Carolina to win the basketball championship.

Then last week, we picked the field over Tiger in the Masters, selecting any Euro as the winner; European, South American, whatever.

Now the pick is about football.

As you have undoubtedly noticed, based on the loopy spring game, OU is considered by media types as, well, greatly great. The need to have OU thought of as perfect by a wide range of homers makes for an interesting psychological study -- and extension of living through your children, so to speak. Associate with percieved greatness, maybe some will rub off.

The truth is: OU has a questionable offensive line and debatable defesive secondary coaching. OU's schedule is also really tough. Don't laugh at BYU's passes in the opener. At Miami will be big-time rough.

Two picks: Texas over OU.

Oklahoma State over Georgia.

Clip and save fans.

well said KC. Nice pick on the golf. Sarcastical.

Hope OU wins them all.

I love this guy, he sounds like a broken record, Media/local sports talk radio are homers, OU is overated, "I am the greatest sports analyst in the world and no one can pickem like me!" Picker, 2 out of 3 above are absolutely true until OU pulls their crap together and wins a BCS game, can't be number one without proving it. That shouldn't take away from the fact that OU is a dominant program and is deservedly in the top 10 every year.

As for the homers, well they want job security like the rest of us, I expect it to get worse given the current state of the economy.

Sam Bradford is a good college quarterback, this year he will have the chance to prove he is a great college quarterback. The only two games he was pressured in the pocket this last season, he lost. Not all his fault, but this year he will not have the dominant o-line that he did last year and he will have the chance to prove that his skill set has moved beyond sitting back, throwing strikes witha big arm to recievers who have all day to use their 4.4 speed to get open. Highschool quarterbacks can do that.

I am keeping score this year picker! And of course, go Pokes and may all the Cowboys out their pray that our defense shows up this year, any defense at all will do!

I am clipping this article, but can not save it. (I need toilet paper)

Let me get this straight, wasn't it the Picker who said after we all knew who would be in the Final Four that UNC would not win it, and looked at a Michigan State-Villanova National Championship game? Now, the 'greatest prognosticator who ever lived' is crowing about his early season pick winning it all. All this jumping on and off picks is gonna give someone flat feet.

Euros are NOT from Argentina. Who wouldn't take 1 to 144 chance (the field over Eldrick). Who gets those kind of odds? Jack Kevorkian maybe? Ya think his odds were good about completing his mission?

Mr. Picker, you absolutely make your living on stirring the wasp's nest about OU and the 'homer media'. How do you consider yourself any different than them?

Of course Texas will be beat OU. It's the same team they beat last year, without the Fabulous O-line.

Haha, so by saying that a Euro would win the Masters you get to count somebody from South America?? How ridiculous is that? Why not throw in the Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Australian, etc. while you're at it? Apparently, by your count, everyone in the world who is not from the United States is European. You must have been a great geography student, Pick.

And somebody else brought up a great point: When do you plan on writing an original blog again? It seems like the last 4 months we have been plagued with this repeated prattle consisting of how overrated OU is, homer media hacks, and your so-called "impeccable" (fixed) record.

Yaaaawwnnnn. Give us something worth reading for a change.
The Picker (4 years ago)
BTWannabe, we'll find out just how good Bradford is, with that offensive line. To complete his pro audition, he'll play more under center, which could be dangerous, as it is much closer to the defensive line. Guaranteeing your Cowboys, how's that for a nice summer present. If your off-beat coach doesn't ruin the quarterback with too many options.

NewMexiMike, here's something you can steal and impress your friend with: The Lakers aren't winning it all.

Hey Vern, thanks for thinking of us before the meds wear off.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
NewMexiMike? Still the same MexiMike here, chum.

And I really hate to steal something that I don't believe is true. I think the Lakers will take it all.

The Cavi's go as Lebron goes. If Lebron has a couple of bad shooting nights, the Cav's will fall. Besides, LA already proved they could beat the Cavs in Cleveland and in LA. Good enough for me.

Hey Picker you are right! I guess the truth just hurts for some people!!!!

Keyboard Cowboy, I prefer to think of him as "8-2 Bob". That's 8-2 against the perpetual "program on the rise" Oklahoma State. Soon to be 9-2 after yet another thrashing in Norman this year. We scored 60 on you in Stillwater, heck we may put 80 on you in Norman.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
Mgsooner, I'm glad to see you making such a intelligent prediction against OSU. And if you have to stay in state with your record just to make yourself feel better about Bobby's record, I totally understand. But maybe you should wait the season out before talking about hanging 80 on anybody...or maybe you can jump over to the Texas board and try to talk smack...or to a BCS board?
mgsooner (4 years ago)
I really feel just fine Mike. Winning 6 conference titles in one decade will do that for ya. We'll go ahead and make it 7 of 10 this year.

And really before you can talk trash about the BCS you should try MAKING the BCS. OSU can't win a bowl game themselves other than bowls like the Sam's Choice Bowl or the Great Value Bowl.
mgsooner (4 years ago)
Wow Keyboard, don't take it so personally. I guess I hit a nerve.
mgsooner (4 years ago)
Keyboard, I'm sensing that you may be experiencing some issues with anger.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
Mgsooner, last I checked, you yourself didn't win ANY conference championships. But keep living your life through OU football...it's what Sooner fans do best.
mgsooner (4 years ago)
Mike, I'm actually more of a basketball fan than football. I just like getting you Aggies all riled up.
mgsooner (4 years ago)
Keyboard you do paint a colourful portrait, I will give you that. You've got a couple of things wrong, however. Today I actually donned my Wal-Mart purchased OU jersey and have a Zima in hand.

And my Friday is now complete.

Again....YOU are correct Vern. That would be BUD!!
madhatter (4 years ago)
Questionable o-line, can't stop anyone on 3rd and 7, etc. - all true, but when are we going to address the most glaring shortcoming in the entire program? Bob 'doesn't make it back to the line of scrimmage but appears to have the first down' Barry. Many of us have to work Saturdays and depend on the radio to let us know what's going on, but... 'After completing his first 6 passes he's only 4 of 12 on his last 10 attempts' ??? That's as embarassing as losing to Boise State. Where's the outrage??? Am I the only one who has to listen??
mgsooner (4 years ago)
Madhatter, I love Bob Barry but I share your sentiments. Unfortunately it appears that he is welcome to the gig as long as he would like to keep it. When he does decide to retire, I hope we go after someone like Craig Way, who does a phenomenal job on the Texas football broadcasts.
T Bone (4 years ago)
The picker might be right on his football predictions. Surprise me OU and beat Texas. Sure is sad seeing Sooners sad after the middle of October.
mgsooner (4 years ago)
Let me be a bit more specific, I'm not saying we should try to hire the actual Craig Way, just someone like him.
Gene M (4 years ago)
Mr. Picker, how can you tell us that the OU schedule is "really tough" and then make no reference to the best team they will face . . . Tulsa?
