Mildren was Much More than Football

Jack Mildren came to Oklahoma from west Texas to make his name as a Sooner football player.
But he was always much more than simply a football player.
He only talked about his football days when asked. He always seemed to downplay his abilities.
But anyone that saw him play knew he was special.
He was arguably the best wishbone quarterback ever - anywhere.
That makes him a sports legend in Oklahoma.
Yet, in his post-football life, he was just as successful.
He became one of the most popular politicians in the state.
There are few people who ever met him, in sports or politics, that didn't hold him in high regard.
He was really a terrific person.
He was always smiling, upbeat and willing to talk to everyone.
He was, most of all, just a nice guy.
I saw him play football. He was great.
But he was a better person. And, that's saying a lot.

Well said. A great football hero and a great citizen. A rare combination. He will be missed and hopefully remembered for many years to come.
