Mine That Bird is Why We Watch
Published: 5/4/2009 4:32 PM

Mine That Bird has such a great story, and had such a great run to the roses, that it is inevitable that horse racing will get a boost.
That's why the Kentucky Derby is one of the great events in sports.
Mine That Bird cost $9,500 and got to the Kentucky Derby in a trailer pulled 21 hours behind a pickup driven by the trainer, who needed crutches to get around Churchill Downs.
Mine That Bird finished fourth in the Sun Land Derby at a small track near El Paso in its final prep race for the derby.
It was a legitimate 50-to-1 longshot.
There was little or no reason to believe what happened on Saturday could or would happen.
Mine That Bird was just a reminder of what is great about sports. They play the game, and run the races, because you never know.
And, the occasional Mine That Bird is why we watch.

I expected a backhanded compliment to "Mine that Horse" and talk about how the big time horses still should be considered the best and it was a fluke and that horse shouldn't have been there in the first place without pressure from those outside the big time.. That's your M.O. when it comes to football and basketball afterall.
