Missing: One Eddie

Getting to the 800-victory plateau was apparently not the hurdle that Eddie Sutton needed to clear in order to make it into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame announced its 16 finalists for election Friday and the former Oklahoma State coach was not on the list.
Sutton stepped down at Oklahoma State when he was two wins shy of 800. He came out of retirement to coach last season at San Francisco and surpassed the 800 milestone.
Surely Hall of Fame voters couldn't ignore 800 wins. Could they?
They can, and did.
Sutton, who has been a finalist on multiple occasions before, has often pointed out that the Hall of Fame has essentially turned into an NBA Hall of Fame, with very few college coaches -- especially this side of the Mississippi River -- making the cut.
My guess? Sutton should forget about the Hall of Fame and consider it a career bonus if he ever gets chosen. If he can be a Hall of Fame grandpa for the little ones, that's more a more rewarding title anyway.
P.S.: Michael Jordan is a finalist. I'll bet your house and mine he gets picked.

While I agree that he is deserving of the Naismith Hall of Fame, it's more of an injustice that he's not yet a member of the Collegiate Hall of Fame. Norm Stewart and Nolan Richardson are both members of that honored group, and I think Eddie's accomplishments match well to theirs.
Btw, the Collegiate Hall of Fame was long overdue. Baseball has one, which honors OSU greats like Incaviglia, Ventura, and Coach Ward.

The problem is that the only reason he coached San Fransisco was to get that 800th win. There was no actual reasoning other than that to step back into coaching. I think that looked very manufactured and packaged to the voters, unfortunately. Also, although his personal issues shouldn't be an issue they often become the determining factor when you can only allow so many nominees in.

I think he will eventually get in...just not yet. These hurdles are still fresh in a lot of people's minds. Give it three to five more years.
