Missing Stormin' Norman

I didn’t realize how much I missed Stormin’ Norman Stewart -- a hardened man who was capable of delivering a zinger of a quote -- until I talked to the former Missouri coach for a story that will appear in Wednesday editions of the Tulsa World.

Stewart was reminiscing about OSU-Missouri games of yesteryear and the subject veered to Kansas coach Bill Self, who played on an NCAA Tournament team for OSU in 1983. Stewart coached at Missouri from 1967-99, so, of course, he coached against Self when Self was a Cowboy player.

During a Coaches vs. Cancer function attended by Stewart and Self, Stewart made a comment about Self being an outstanding player at OSU. When it was Self’s turn to speak, he said Stewart was too kind in his praise. Self said his offensive skills were such that Stewart never assigned his best defender to guard Self.

Stewart couldn’t resist. He said he got up and said this: “Yes, I did Bill -- when my best defensive player was tired.”
