Model Pro Day
Published: 3/31/2010 3:33 PM
Last Modified: 3/31/2010 3:36 PM

Before we get to Sam Bradford's pro day, which was so brilliantly great that the enthusiastic response almost knocked the earth off its proper axis, a couple of important matters are worth a mention.

They're trying to ruin the NCAA basketball tournament by expanding it.

Expanding to almost 100 teams is a disgrace.

It is wonderful now, why ruin it?

It will satisfy greedy school presidents and help rotten coaches keep their jobs: Hey, you can't fire me, we made the big dance 19 straight years (losing each time by an average of 25).

Shame on everybody concerned.

Topic two, Tiger will be treated like royalty at the Masters next week. That's because the Masters is a Good 'Ol Boys club like no other. He has no chance of winning and will be lucky to make the cut.

Here's what we think of Tiger's recent performances: Booooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Now for Sam the Man's Pro Day.

He threw passes indoors in room-temperature conditions while wearing shorts, people! With nobody rushing, kids! With nobody so much as saying Boo! fans. Word was, he threw it straight and he threw it hard. Guess what. In shorts, while munching chips and dip, so could the Picker!

What does playing toss in shorts have to do with the NFL?

Pad up Ray Lewis and let him sack Sam from the blind side. Now THAT'S a pro day.

Bradford has been hurt. A lot. He could be Peyton Manning. Or Jason White.

His future will be a legitimate matter of reasonable discussion until somebody who weighs 250 and runs like the wind plants him.

Pro Day for a commercial modeling career maybe, not an NFL qb.

Thank you for some sanity in this leg-humping media market.

I actually agree on all three topics.

Getting into the NCAA tournament should be a privilege, not a right. When nearly 100 teams are allowed in, there is nothing special about it. This is about money, plain and simple. CBS wants as much as possible before its contract is up with the NCAA. It's just an absolute shame.

Tiger's reentry will serve more as a circus act than a golf tournament. What's the over/under on the number of golfers who refuse to answer questions about Tiger after their respective rounds are finished?

Everybody knows Sam Bradford can throw hard. Everybody knows he is accurate. What everyone wants to know is whether or not he can make it through one season without being injured. I guarantee that Dwight Freeney hits a lot harder than some BYU defensive end. Scouts learned nothing from his pro day that they didn't already know. Let's not make more of it than what it was.

I couldn't agree more. Sam who? Tiger who? Media HYPE!!! RUN!!!

Tiger will be in the last group on Sunday afternoon. It would take more than this turbulence to ruin his game.

Gene -- you know those 11 dinners you owe me?
All 11 double or nothing, says your man's man Tiger doesn't finish in the top.....
five. The only last group he'll be in Sunday is at the rehab buffet.

This just in: Sam Bradford just completed a Frisbee to his dog.

Expanding the tourney is all about extra money for CBS.

Tiger Woods? I won't think he'll win a major title this year.

Pro Day showed the scouts that Sam Bradford has a good arm and is an accurate passer. However, it didn't show his ability to escape from pressure and his ability to take hits from defensive players. We won't find out how good Bradford is until he actually plays in the NFL.

Mr. Picker, what happened to, "he has no chance of winning and will be lucky to make the cut?" And . . . it isn't eleven. Is making the cut a fair proposition?
But What Do I Know? (3 years ago)
Talk about expansion has been madness in March (and now April) about March Madness.

Only the Pick could find something wrong with Pro Day. Do you have another alternative for how the pro guys can can get a live look at a prospect? Last time I checked, NFL and college seasons coincided...We all know he didnt play last year. I think he had an ok year in '08(his team scored more points than any offense in the modern era and he won the Heisman). The only way to know how he will respond to the NFL's physical play is when he plays, kinda how they have been doing it forever.

You cheerleader/homer clowns forgot one small thing: The Picker is always right about OU.

So you guys like the prospects of next year? Where the program is going? A debatable qb who, against decent teams, showed zero mobility and a scatter arm? You like a minor running game? A runner who has been hurt forever, backed up by somebody who has shuffled around at runner and wide receiver? You like bubble screens? You like many defensive questions? You like being owned by Texas? You like losing four? You like the goal of another fringe bowl? We don't. We're trying to evoke changes for the better, not mindless cheerleading.

You OU fans need to lighten up. Why does the Picker "state the obvious" about OU all the time? BECAUSE NOBODY ELSE IN SOONER LAND WILL DO IT!!! If his comments about Bradford are so "obvious," why isn't anybody else in the media making them? The media reports about Pro Day were comical: Bradford's passes not only looked perfect, they "sounded faster" than the X-15! Look, I hope this guy has a great career, I really do. But I wouldn't bet a plug nickel on it. HE IS A SYSTEM QUARTERBACK WHO HAS SHOWN LIMITED ABILITY TO KEEP FROM BEING DESTROYED. And you want to see him play for the Rams, because St. Louis is close enough to visit? With their O-line, that would be the worst place for him to play. If you want to follow Bradford's career with the Rams, better check out Visiting Hours at the local hospital.

Mr. Picker,
When will Bob Stoops fire an assistant coach? Some new blood wouldn't hurt.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Tattoo, great. He showed that he can still throw after surgery....with nobody rushing him. How did that prove anything? Again, the biggest concern on Bradford isn't whether or not he can throw but how that shoulder and the rest of his body can hold up throughout an NFL season.

You're right, the NCAA expansion is all about the money. In fact, I said that. It still doesn't make it right. It waters the tournament down into a free-for-all for any team with a winning record. Like you said, we can't have a college football playoff but the NCAA will allow this?
dcood (3 years ago)
Easy Picker... I said nothing about next year, only talking about Bradford and your stating what we all know about pro days, that there is no pressure or tackling. Duh. I actually dont think OU will be much better this season than last... that is not what we were talking about. And no, you're not ALWAYS right(you are right alot) about OU or anything else.

Picker, such a kind man you are, the kind that should stick to knitting or something he might be good at.

Sam was clear to everyone that it was just a workout, he was throwing against the air. He HAS INTEGRITY! Something you lack. You do your best to pick fights with the fans, by expressing your uneducated opinions. Comment about your own team, we don't want to hear it.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
