Hold up on that Tuna melt.
AP

Dean Blevins came on after the OU game and said the Sooners' victory at Missouri was one of the biggest since the national championship season.

One quick question: Why?

OU could still lose five games.

A game for a second-level bowl is not a big game.

Texas is a big game.

Oklahoma State is a big game.

Missouri is a medium to large big game.

About Oklahoma State: This is the best offense in the country. Period.

We have gotten numerous O-State-based emails thanking us for helping to coach the victory over Nebraska, as we suggested that the Cowboys start the game in the prevent defense, and end up in something normal.

Which happened.

Quarterbacks and receivers are too good to play straight, you have to blitz more often than not.

OU at OSU: Edge to OSU.

About Tulsa: It is in very tough at Houston, can't believe the visitors are favored more than a field goal.

About the nation: There is no way a one-loss team can pass an undefeated West Virginia.

A Michigan-Ohio State rematch would be watched by the same number of people attending the Independence Bowl and is the dumbest idea ever.

Hard to believe Louisville is favored over West Virginia, even in Kentucky.

About the NFL: Dallas is a Super Bowl contender.

Amazing. Even in those cases in which I disagree with you ... you never fail to entertain. LOL

I'd like to hear your take on what it takes to attract the poll voters. I kind of lean toward the opinion that they prefer teams with "sparkle" over teams that just relentlessly take care of business. I think that's why TU is having trouble attracting votes (like from Mr. Hoover).

The OU - Mizzou game was a big game...for Missouri. As has been reflected in the St Louis press, this game had more import than any other at Farout Field in the past quarter century. But for Oklahoma, it should never have been considered so. Blevins is merely reflecting the attitude surrounding the Sooners which began during Switzer's later years and grew exponentially through the years of the three wise men (Gibbs, Scnellenberger and Blake); that Oklahoma has leveled out and with the exception of a peak here or a valley there, is now officially only a 'good' team and no longer a dominate one. Good teams win the vast majority of their contests against average teams, most of their games against good teams and occasionally beat a dominant one. And this attitude is easily identifiable in the approach the media takes (yes, picker, even the shameless homers) and in the fans expectations.

Bill: The polls are nuts.

How can Arkansas be six or so spots below Auburn after having mopped Auburn off its own field?!

Get this: ESPN's Kirk Buckeyestreet came on the air Saturday evening and said that in his poll, head-to-head results didn't matter!

Question to WG: How did yanking that kid out of his redshirt year after dark versus pitiful Colorado work out against Missouri?
Chris (6 years ago)
Picks: riddle me this. If a pollster recognizes the error in his ways, does he make it up the following week and show it...or does he keep punishing a quality team? You still thinking Tulsa may be the best team in the state?

Chris: Excellent question.

My guess is poll voters are hard-headed and would never admit anything illogical.

Something provably wrong, like the Arkansas-Auburn flip-flop, would seem to be grounds for having your home phone number listed.

At the moment, I'd rank the area teams: Arkansas, OSU, OU, TU.

Excellent discussions in blogville. I'll give you my takes one at a time.

Wilson said he was surprised that Brown didn't get into the game, but that Coach Gundy decides which RB's play. Evidently, Patrick didn't get tired enough to warrant a substitution. OU still has 4 big games left on the slate, so it's still early to judge the red shirt decision. I will admit, however, that if Brown doesn't see significant playing time soon, then the decision was hasty.

ANY POLL VOTER WHO TAKES AUBURN OVER ARKANSAS IS EITHER CLUELESS OR WITH AN AGENDA. Herbie must be the latter. The argument could be made to vote a loser over a winner if the winner won a very close game on its home field after getting outplayed. But the Hogs made pig slop of Auburn on the road.

Okie State's offense is very good, but I'll take Ohio State's as the best in the nation. Michigan's is next. OSU's is top five in my book. Unfortunately, they have no defense. If they had a D, they would have closed out a close game or two and been 7-1.

If OU, TU, and OSU played a round robin on a nuetral field, all teams would finish 1-1. I'll let ya'll argue over which team beats the other. Arkansas is the best of the Big 4 to date. TU plays noone. Not its fault, but fact. You think TU would beat Nebbish at home? Please. Mizzou on the road? Hardly. But go Hurricane. OU is improving where it counts the most: on defense and in the running game. It's as if the OL was challenged after losing AD, knowing that AP couldn't make his own hole. They have responded. If Stoopsie and Co. can sign a big time QB, this young squad will threaten the Sears Trophy in the next two years. I'll set the over/under on OU losses to close the season at 1.5, and I'll take the under. Any takers????

By the way Mr. Picker, when Minnie covers tonight, you go down. If not, we push. I normally like free rolls, but pushing gets me no closer to the prize tier.

Jeremy: I think you're right, Minnie at home is tough -- that number has gone straight down to next to nothing.

Brad Johnson, Mr. Excitement.

John Fox the worst coach in the NFL.

Earlier, he gave a win to Minnie, trying a cross-field lateral on a punt.

Sunday night, he called off a blocked field goal.

Please clarify what 'year after dark' means and I'll answer your question.

A big-shot freshman was jerked out of his redshirt year late in the game with horrific Colorado and hasn't carried since.

Course, there's always the fourth quarter against Baylor.

W.G. Smith (6 years ago)
Very glib; but you pull the same nonsense that the rest of us pull when making a point. You ignore that which is relevant to the counterpoint of your argument. For instance, you've been quite fond of pointing out how poorly Mike Stoops and Mark Mangino have done since leaving Oklahoma. What you do not point out is that both Kansas and Arizona have two strikes against them from the start; they have never been able to consistently recruit blue chip talent because of the proximity of both schools to other more glamorous institutions. Exceptions? Sure, Snyder at KSU, Barnett at Northwestern, Franchione at TCU...but they are not the rule. Mike Stoops will probably fail at Arizona, but I sincerely doubt it has anything to do with his lack of prowess as a coach. As a head coach, perhaps; but he certainly knows at least as much as some desk jockey who crows about giving advice to Oklahoma State about how to play Nebraska, a team still in decline. Which brings us to another comment made by our dear picker; after the NU - Texas game you asked where everyone who had disparaged Bill Callahan's hiring at Nebraska had suddenly gotten off to. Well, we're right here. Callahan fattened the Nebraska calf in '06 against the likes of Troy, Louisiana Tech, Nichols State, both Kansas schools and Iowa State. That they played Texas closely was more of a condemnation of Texas than a tribute to the Huskers. Current record? 6-3. Where are they going to be in four weeks? Probably 7-5. And where will your comments about Callahan be then?

WG: About ruining a star recruit's redshirt season to sweep up after Colorado and Baylor?.....
W.G. Smith (6 years ago)
I'll reiterate what I've already stated, at least in terms of Chris Brown. To you, Brown's failure to appear and carry in last weekend's Missouri game was undoubtedly further proof of a poor coaching decision - to remove his redshirt, that is. I've already responded to this issue by simply stating that this sort of situation is best viewed in retrospect. You may be right...or you might be wrong. Only time will tell. And as far as the Mizzou redshirt situation, sorry, I'm unfamiliar with it.

People, I have a limited attention span, as Bill O'Reilly says, keep it pithy...

If you're going to quote O'Reilly, you're in the wrong blog.

Anybody like Louisville tonight?
Not here.
W.G. Smith (6 years ago)
I thought Louisville was tomorrow night. I like WVA.
