Mr. Marshall! Mr. Gregg Marshall! Please report to the coach search!

Wish I had a new name or bulletin regarding "Joe Versus the College Basketball Coaching Industry." Not happening, though. Not tonight.

The best I can do is speculate on the guy who makes a logical "next on Castiglione's list," now that Wichita State has gone and won the NIT.

3 reasons why Joe C should seriously consider offering Wichita State's Gregg Marshall the job:

1 – The man appears to know what he's doing. You don't take Winthrop to seven NCAA tournaments in nine years by luck. This Marshall accomplished before leaving for Wichita State four years ago. He went 11-20 his first year with the Shockers, but has won 54 games his last two seasons.

2 – The are four Texas kids, three Kansans and one Okie on Wichita State's roster. Someone on Marshall's staff knows a few high school coaches in the region.

3 – If not Marshall… um…. Who exactly?

3 reasons why Joe C can't possibly consider offering Marshall the gig:

1 – Went the unproven, mid-major route five years ago. Whoops. Marshall is older than Jeff Capel, has won quite a few more games. But can you trust your doubled-over program to anyone but a known commodity?

2 – Marshall can't understand what he's getting into. The Valley's a nice league, but the Big 12 is about to get treacherous. Marshall was big man on campus at his first two jobs; at OU he'll start as the second-most popular coach in his own arena, to say nothing of Stoops' shadow. That ain't for everyone

3 – He has an ace in the hole that nobody knows about, and he's ready to throw that sucker down to save the search.

If you're going to look @ Gregg Marshall to be head coach you might as well look @ Shaka Smart too.

I think what VCU has done is more impressive than Wichita State winning the NIT.

The snobbishness toward "mid-major" coaches is stupid. As Butler (the size of Tulsa and ORU) and VCU show, mid-major programs can compete at the highest level. Assuming Butler gets past VCU this weekend, they will play for the national championship two years in a row. How many teams, regardless of conference, have done that since UCLA's run decades ago?

Marshall's stock went up again last night - no doubt he's on the short end of the wish list right now.

JS, Florida was the last team to play in consecutive NCAA title games in 2006 & 2007 winning both against Ohio State & UCLA.

SoonerSkins, I think the reason they would consider Marshall and not Smart is coaching experience.

This is only Smart's second year of being a head coach. Marshall has several years at Winthrop (including making the tournament several times) and seems to be building at Wichita State).

In the short run, Smart as the more impressive run in the tournament but doesn't have the stability that Marshall does.

Who know what will happen. Smart might be a flash in the pan or building something consistent. Maybe Marshall is great at being the big fish in a small pond and would crumble in a big setting.

Joe C. doesn't have an enviable task of trying to reconstruct the UO basketball program.
