My New Hero
Published: 2/12/2008 10:21 AM

I have a new hero and his name is Allen Stout.
On a scout.com Web site message board for Oklahoma State sports, Stout wrote a post in which he asked this question: If you had to use your real name instead of an alias on Internet message boards, would you still say the same things?
In the interest of furthering his cause, he made his profile public and, bingo, there's his name, Allen Stout.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith, in not exactly the same words, once said anonymity breeds guts of steel. Just my opinion, but Stout has real guts.
Will this start a Web revolution and everyone in the country will all of a sudden start using their real names instead of CB handles (I'm dating myself there with a Convoy-era reference) when conversing via Internet? No, but the world would be a less nasty place if that was the case.

I'm with you. But more importantly, I am very disappointed that the World is a conduit for the hate-mongers (especially the Oral Roberts haters) to spread their hate. Most newspaper Web site do not provide space for such nonsense. The World has to be held responsible for spreading the hatred.

Imagine if The Picker started using his real name!? He might even have to go take a journalism class sometime!

Ken makes a good point. Most comments are pretty disgusting to read on just about any article.

You make a great point, Jimmie.

I can think of no better place to start than the World Picker crawling out of his closet.

Blog posters should be next to come clean.

It might raise the quality of the postings of both blogger and bloggee.

We got a great big convoy, ain't she a beautiful sight! CONVOY!

Thanks for putting that in my head all day, Jimmie.

Anyway, I think using your real name does make the discourse more civil and more real.

Sincerely,

Larry Still
