NASCAR doesn't go far enough

The changes in the point system for NASCAR's Chase for the Nextel Cup did not go far enough.
That won't be a popular view for the traditional NASCAR fans.
But a full-ahead charge on putting winning at the top should have been implemented.
Instead, NASCAR did not go far enough.
The idea to seed the drivers in the Chase by victories is a great idea. It rewards drivers with a higher spot at the start of the 10-race Chase for winning races.
That's the way it should be.
At the same time, adding just five points to the winning points total of each race isn't enough.
It is enough to make a few changes in the Chase but not enough to bring everyone to the front.
The drivers must decide if the risks of getting to the front outweigh the rewards. The added points and getting a better slot in the Chase are added rewards.
But once those drivers get to the Chase the points aren't enough to make them risk too much.
A Chase racer could still win the championship by simply finishing strong every week without a victory.
But what was great about the announcement of the new point system was another indication that NASCAR listens to its fans.
It doesn't shy away from making changes that its fans want.
That's one of the big reasons for NASCAR's growth. They listen.
Perhaps baseball, basketball and the other traditional sports could learn a thing or two from the good old boys of NASCAR.
