NFL, Big 12 Media Days and OCA Clinic

I'm glad football is back. And I'm not talking about the NFL, either.

I chuckle when I hear NFL offcials, players, etc., say they're glad football is back. Where did it go? Did you really miss mini-camps and 'organized team activities?' Raise you're hand if you actually thought the NFL was going to miss meaningful games? I didn't think so.

So most teams are going to miss a week of training camp, and the league canceled one preseason game. I feel bad about the Hall of Fame Game and all, but I think I'll live.

As long as no regular season games were missed and an 18-game schedule wasn't approved, all is right with the sporting world.

And all is right in the high school and college ranks, too. Where did they go? The same place the NFL did -- on their yearly spring and summer break. Now that break is just about over. How can you tell? This week is the double whammy of Big 12 Media Days in Dallas and the Oklahoma Coaches Association Clinic right here in Tulsa.

If you haven't been following the Tulsa World's coverage of Big 12 Media Days -- well, shame on you. Tuesday's paper and the website featured wall-to-wall coverage, and you'll get the same Wednesday.

In Sunday's paper, we'll have a fans' practice primer for OU, OSU and TU, as well a preview of Conference USA Media Day, which takes place Sunday in Memphis.

As for the OCA, I'm sitting at the Tulsa World booth in the Southern Hills Marriott, getting a chance to meet with area coaches. I'll be back Wednesday morning.

The Coaching Clinic is a good place to check the pulse of coaches on several different topics. You can read what coaches have to say about the hot topics of the day all week in the World -- like how hot it's been in Oklahoma this summer.

And what's the best thing about the Coaching Clinic -- it means the start of football practice can't be too far off.
